This is the amount of the vet bill now owed by the Pedro Munoz refuge, in Castilla La Mancha, the heart of the galgo hunting area.
With 3 – 4 galgos on average arriving every day at the doors of the refuge, there is pneumonia to treat, broken feet or legs, bad wounds, some dogs needing hospitalisation. Some of the puppies are in such a bad way when they arrive that they can’t be saved.
There are only 3 volunteers to look after over 100 dogs, and it really is an emotional roller coaster ride to know where the money will come from to settle the veterinary and food bills.
But there is a little good news.
Some more building work has been done; 3 rooms have been built in red brick, for shelter for the dogs. The floors still need concreting, but a friend of the refuge has installed electricity in the rooms, so they have lighting, and also at some stage in the future, radiators can be installed for heating for the cold winter nights.
But the cycle of rescuing, fostering, and rehoming of the abandoned galgos is a never ending cycle. No sooner have some been taken to France or Belgium or Holland, but more galgos arrive at the refuges to replace them.

Hi,
if I could get a list of the most urgently
needed antibiotics, I could have send them
to Pedro Munoz via a german veterinarian,
who lives in southern Spain immediately.

Ulla Keller
Hi Ulla
I’ve pasted below a piece from the Amigos de los Galgos website. If you click on their link on the right here, it should take you through. She doesn’t actually specify names, but I know they need Scalibor collars which protect against the sandfly bites, which cause Leishmania. I got some from my vet, they were about 18 euros each, large size and small size (for podencos?)
Here’s the copy & pasted piece.
We need antiparasite treatment to avoid Mediterranean diseases, like Leishmania or Elichia, which are endemic and life-threatening to our dogs. Hot, summer weather increases the risk. The treatment for each dog is very, very expensive.
Also, we need donations to prepare galgos for being adopted in France. It is very expensive and that sometimes makes us run into debt with the vets.
If sometime any of you would come here for a visit, I will be very pleased to show you around, for you to know firsthand the conditions there.
Wouldn’t it be fantastic if there were enough volunteers in an area to get a van load of supplies, especially if they were donated.
Maybe an idea would be to contact local vets and see if they can collect treatments which people have either not used on their dogs, or not completely used, and these could be sent to Spain.
I understand that is what happens in France with prescribed medicines for humans – they are sent to places like Africa.
Perhaps something which could be investigated and then posted on Galgo News to spread the word.
There is a piece on Baas Galgo about a van from Holland filled with supplies, heading for Spain.
For me, sometimes, it’s frustrating, because some of the reports I find are in Spanish, and I just can’t understand them, even though I studied Latin for a couple of years!
If you find anything out to add to this, Ulla, or enough information that I could write a piece about what medical supplies are needed, email me direct and I’ll put something together.
Thanks again for your input, very much appreciated.

Hello, do they have a PayPal account so I can make a small donation towards the vets fees? Thank you
Hi
Thanks for your offer.
If you go on the Amigos de los Galgos website, click on the link to it on the right-hand side of my homepage, or on the article itself, you will find details of their PayPal account and also their bank details.
Please mention Galgo News when you contact them.
Thanks on their behalf. The ladies and Emilio are really desperate.

Thanks for that, but unless I am being daft, I can’t see any PayPal information. Do they have an email address so I can ask them for it? Thank you
Sorry you are still having problems. I’ve rewritten the details of how to find the PayPal account.
Go into the Amigos de los Galgos homepage; scroll down to the box for Levriers.net. Click on this box, another page will open. Scroll down this page and you will see the PayPal account details.
Hope it’s sorted now.

All the best

Since the hunt is not regulated, the gov’t bears the onus of the responsibility and since the hunters are the responsibe parties in this issue and too many flout the law, the gov’t should be paying the shelters for the work they do on their behalf for humane care of the galgos.
Hello my friends,
I am Nuria Blanco from Amigos de los Galgos a Spanish galgo rescue orga. who works in Spain. We have a website in French, as most of our galgos are placed in France or in Belgium. We rescue galgos from many places and help refuges but we work closely with the refuge of Pedro Muñoz since long.
Il you want to help financially for the building of a sewage system in the refuge and to make the works needes to avoid this catastrophic situation comes again, you can make a transfer to the account of the refuge in need, that is to say Pedro Muñoz.
On the other hand, some rescue groups in Spain has offered their help to Loli, the woman who runs the refuge, and she would be helped by taking out some galgos from the dogpound nearby, where she had planed to take out some if it were not have been by the floodings.
At the moment, we think we can cope with those there which, anyway, are too many.
Thanks for doing directly the transfer to the refuge .

Bonjour Nuria
Thank you for your comment. I will copy and
paste it to the latest story about the flooding at Pedro Munoz and then it can
be read twice. Ill also link it to your website, of course.
I will post the appeal on behalf of Joanna in a
couple of days, when people have hopefully donated to help the flooded
refuges.
