Abandoned in the Middle of Nowhere

Castille La Mancha is a bad region if you are a galgo. And even worse if you are abandoned. News in from Galgos sin Fronteras of two abandoned galgos which were eventually saved.

At the beginning of February, two galgos encamped near a house in the middle of nowhere. They were there several days – why were they left this long? Would it have happened if it had been a man? No! So why did it happen to 2 dogs?!

One of them did not move, all that time. The other one fled, as soon as there was any noise.

At last a volunteer came to see what she could do.

It was dreadfully cold, totally isolated. The female, who was renamed Lola, fled as soon as the volunteer arrived. The male, renamed Alpaca, didn’t move – a skeleton, shivering with fear, exhausted. Eventually the volunteer managed to approach him with food. And then, after a lot of time and patience, consumed by hunger, Lola also approached, fearful, but hunger got the better of her and she eventually started to eat.

Then came the problem of trying to get these starving terried galgos into a vehicle to take them to a refuge. Alpaca, the immobile male, was not so much a problem to lift into the car, but the terrified Lola kept running away. And yet, these two were inseparable, maybe brother and sister, and with patience eventually she plucked up courage to let the volunteer touch her and hold her and get her into the car too.

The volunteer had been calling Cristina Garcia, of Galgos sans Fronteras, and although it is difficult at this time of year when the refuges are bursting with abandoned galgos, she was able to help. It is probably the first time that the male, Alpaca, had slept upon a blanket, the first time he had not been hurt, the first time the pair of them had received kindness and caresses. They are inseparable, loving galgos.

Cristina takes so many galgos from the municipal compounds, she pays kennel fees, vets fees, and on top of this she has now taken these two wonderful affectionate galgos to find good homes for them.

These two galgos, good and incredibly affectionate even after all they have been through, whom some indescribable galguerro cared not one jot, who abandoned them in the middle of nowhere in the freezing cold, just because they no longer served a purpose to him, will now experience regular meals and a warm comfortable bed for the rest of their lives, when they find their forever homes.

A million thanks to Cristina, in the name of Paco and Lola.

And a lifetime curse upon you and your family, heartless galguerro.

Thank you for your message. Yes, the stories out of Spain are terrible – the galgos in Spain suffer horrendously, and also the podencos in the Spanish Islands, like Ibiza, Lanzarote, and the Canary Islands. They need all our support and all our voices raised to help them.
Keep reading Galgo News and tell everyone about the galgos.

As it has already been stated above there are way too manny sad stories comming out of Spain. Then again we hear about brave kindhearted people who save as manny of these poor neglected galgoes as possibel. This is the heartwarming part of it.Christina Garcia saved my greyhound in janurary of 2005. He has lived with me since March 22 2005. I thought that I was waiting for a galgo but out of the crate came a young racing greyhound. I have since found his lineage and his sire and parts of his dams pedigree.Through prolonged research and the help og good people. It was important to me to find out as much as I could about my young greyhounds background. Both his sire and dam were exported from Ireland to Spain. Both of them ran at the mobile tracks eventually Connor was raced there as well. Then stolen and somehow he ended up starved in front of the maingates of the royal palace in Madrid. Connor is indeed a royal greyhound and a very deeply loved family member.I now have three greyhounds and one whippet.Yours sincerly Lisbeth Mønsted Larsen Greyhound Action Denmark.

Thank you for commenting on Galgo News and what an interesting story you have about your greyhound. It just proves what happens to thousands of greyhounds bred in Ireland and the UK, and sent abroad without a care as to what happens to them. Please keep in touch with me, and let me know about any work you do on behalf of greyhounds and galgos in Denmark. Especially, how do they adapt to the cold weather, when they have such thin coats.
    Best wishes
