It is easy to forget that, apart from the mass of mainland Spain, there are also groups of islands in the Mediterranean and Atlantic which are also under Spanish rule, and whose animals also suffer maltreatment at the hands of the native Spanish.
I previously highlighted a problem on Lanzarote, one of the Canary Islands, where many people to on holiday to take advantage of the winter sun. But behind the scenes, life for the islands animals is, on the whole, horrific. However, there are a few brave souls who work to improve conditions and speak up for those who have no one else to speak on their behalf.
Lynne Fisher, from the Sara Animal Shelter on Lanzarote, has sent me the latest news.
“At the moment I am trying to organise a field trip for 7 people (vets and assistants) coming from Holland on a spay and neuter campaign. Trying to find sponsors or cheap flights, accommodation and all the medications needed is a nightmare. I’m slowly getting there though… hotels, flights, hire cars, scrubs are all sorted. I have been promised some medications from a European animal welfare association but even they are saying they can’t send as much as usual because of the financial crisis so I will have to look elsewhere.
“Does anyone know of any organisations that might help with this? We need a couple of operating sets, antibiotics and some funding for anaesthetics (we have to buy this as it cannot be brought over by the vets on the plane).
We can accept cheques (euros or sterling) made payable to :
SARA Protectora de Animales
Aptdo. de Correos 566
E-35500 Arrecife
Lanzarote
Islas Canarias
Please mark for the attention of Lynne Fisher – Spey/Neuter programme
Payment can also be made to our bank account :

Let us not forget about the islands, they may be only a speck in the huge ocean, but the people there who care so much for the islands’ animals need all the help they can get, and need to know they are not forgotten by the rest of us.

I live on this beautiful Island of Lanzarote – beautiful that is if you are not a Podenco. If you are then you would be chained up for the majority of your life on a very short chain or living in a dark shed. Fed scraps when anyone remembers your existance and given water infrequently.6 months ago a starving female podenca arrived on my doorstep weighing in at 17 kilos – 6 months on she has reached her ideal weight of 22.5 kilos she is happy, healthy and loved very much. She will never know what it is to be hungry and thirsty, she will never feel worthless and she will never ever have a cruel hand raised to her again. These dogs never cease to amaze me, however badly they have been treated they never loose the ability to love and the passion to please. If anyone is considering adopting please do not be afraid to adopt one of these beautiful, gentle, loving and loyal dogs. They deserve a whole lot more than they get at the hands of the hunters. God Bless them all.
TypePadHi Jacky
Thank you for your comment and for raising awareness of the plight of the adorable podenco on the Spanish Islands – keep us informed of everything going on there – fundraising, rehoming, etc. And also if there is anything we at GN and all our devoted readers to try and help improve the situation for the dogs.

Hi Jacky,
Are you still involved with re-homing Podenco Canario? Please let me know one way or the other.
