Gail and Andrew are two British volunteers who help with the Noah’s Arc animal rescue centre. Gail tells the story of how they got involved. (Gail pictured with their 5 galgos)
Andrew and I got involved with Noah’s Arc about 15 months ago and have become more and more immersed as the months have gone by. It all started when I adopted a rescue cat which unfortunately died suddenly and unexplained in our back garden whilst Andrew was in England.
I was completely distraught and also couldn’t stop grieving. Andrew was at his wits end with me crying all over the place and finally suggested that we get a dog if I couldn’t face another cat. This actually stopped me in my tracks because he was not a dog lover!!
Noahs Arc suggested we foster to see how Andrew liked the idea (he had only had one cat in the past that lived until she was 18, and one dog, which he hated, as a child). We went to see the dog but came back with Amber our first galga and that is when our love affair with galgos began.
She was a scamp (still is) but she loved playing with other dogs when we were on our walks and eventually Andrew agreed we should get another galgo and so Harvey arrived. They are useless off the lead.
No recall whatsoever although we have tried various methods. The last time they were off they killed a cat and nearly caused an accident on the road so now they can only go to a disused training track and play or go for long walks out in the campo on lead.
April 2008 we came upon a couple out walking their dogs and they had found a little galga puppy which they said they would foster. I took her off to the vets and of course fell in love with her and by the time I came back said we weren’t doing enough to help.
Andrew in the mean time had been told that there was a family living under a pine tree on the La Pinilla road. We heard that they were in danger of being shot by the farmer if they weren’t gone by the weekend. Naturally I was upset.
By the morning and a sleepless night by Andrew he had decided we had better go and get them and so our fostering began. Mum Emily now in Belgium with Sandra and the three pups now in Albox with Bruce. And our association with Greyhounds in Need U.K. and Greyhound Rescue Belgium began.
Larisa Počivavšek in Slovenia had been watching our videos on youtube and I had been watching hers of her rescued galga Neka (from Albacete).
She emailed one day asking if she could adopt one of our galgos. We had just rescued one the day before with two huge holes in her back leg. We sent photos of Ebony and it was love at first sight. There is another long story then of how Ebony got to Slovenia!
