All in a day’s work in a perrera in Spain!

Mass of dead dogs 1 250 At the end of the day in a perrera in Spain – whilst the method of euthanasia was probably the cheapest, and painful, at least they will not have to suffer any more.

And this isn’t the fate of just Spain’s abandoned dogs – it is the fate of thousands of dogs throughout Europe, including Croatia, Turkey, Serbia, Romania. I am receiving appeals to post petitions about this on Galgo News, but I can’t help them all – this journal is chiefly about the galgos and podencos.

THe European Commission and individual member states HAVE to deal with the problem at source, which is strict control of breeding of all dogs, and a mass neutering programme.

The Gift of Life is the greatest gift, and the gift of the love of a dog is second – it is unconditional, no holds barred, whatever is done to it.

    That looks horrid.
In the last 4 days friends and I have got 4 dogs into the refuge. This morning i saw 4 strays but couldnt pick them up. When are the authorities going to wake up? I think before any dog leaves a refuge he/she should be nuetered and the police need to crack down on the people breeding dogs and selling them on the markets. Its also been known for petshops to dump there unsold dogs as well, which then end up in the overflowing refuges. Our refuge took another puppy this morning but I cant imagine in my head where hes going to go… with already well over 200 dogs in there. Of course now its Feb, so all the xmas puppies are unwanted as they get bigger and the novelty wears away, so its time to dump them near some houses where the english live and let them deal with the poor souls. We have a case where someone has served a denuncia on the refuge because the owner cant release a pitull without the correct papers. This pitbull had escaped and been wandering for over 2 weeks. Instead of the owner being grateful his dog has survived the motorways and has been picked up by the refuge hes now served a denuncia because the refuge is sticking to the law (for this dog he needs a license which he doesnt have), he also accused the refuge of stealing his pitbull for fighting matches…. uh can anyone tell me how on earth that works???????

Thanks for your post, Tina. I dont think
people outside of Spain realise just how many dogs are put down every
week. And if you can email separately and tell everyone what a denuncia
is, how it works, who raises it, why it happens, what it means to the refuge, I
am certain that would of extreme interest to all our readers whose only
knowledge of what is going on in Spain, with regard to the galgo problem and the
stray dog problem in general, is what they read here – or on rescue association
    websites.
We need to have a concerted effort for a
letter-writing campaign to the European Commission about the stray dog problem
across Europe. I am getting requests to post petitions about stray dogs in
Croatia, Romania, Turkey, the Balkans…….and Italy has a problem too,
although I havent received word of a petition about Italy.
If anyone would like to compose a letter to send to
the EC, especially bearing in mind they are holding a 2-day conference on 1
2nd October on Animal Welfare in the EU, accepting that they have to do
something about the problem, rather than leaving it to the individual member
    states.

    Deara Beryl,
When you say ‘whilst the method of euthanasia was probably cheapest and painful’—how are the dogs killed? I assume they are not given a lethal injection as this way is ‘painless’, are they shot, are they put in a gas chamber? Which method is the cheapest and most painful? Oh god the poor dogs.
I would be most happy to write a letter to the EU, but will need some guidance and topics for inclusion.
    Many thanks.

    Bonjour Valarie
Ill discuss with you privately, as I have been
told the methods used, but to actually print it on the Internet, I need to have
proof, rather than just what volunteers have told me, because obviously the
volunteers need protecting, as they still have to live and work in
    Spain.
