In August 2011, a case of canine rabies was notified to the French Veterinary Services. A French family from the Vendee travelled to Morocco on holiday, and whilst there, they ‘adopted’ a stray 3-month old puppy, which they illegally imported to France.
The puppy presented behavioural changes on 1 August and was admitted to a veterinary clinic on 6 August. It died the following day and the body was shortly sent to the national reference centre where rabies was laboratory-confirmed on 11 August. Contact tracing and post-exposure treatment were initiated immediately
Read the full story here and a further article discussing the need for anti-rabies injections.
If you travel through Europe, be very careful about being tempted to rescue a stray dog. Spain does not have rabies, but travel on through Germany and into former ‘East European’ countries where there is not the same control over dog registration and vaccination, and a similar situation to the above could arise.

Hi Jenny
Its also th reason I dont travel to other
countries – just to Spain and back on rescues – I can cope with that. We
once went to Mogan on Gran Canaria. There were two abandoned dogs
alongside the main road round the Island, one with an injured leg. In thos
days I didnt know of any rescue associations, didnt know what to do.
Its why I hope people will find out about the associations now, from the list
on Galgo News. I still remember the two dogs…..
Keep dreaming of your win…its one many of us
have!
