Walk on by – how can some people? Galga Nana, fighting for life

Galga Nana 200 2 3 2012Every day my inbox is filled with horror stories about the galgos and podencos of Spain – that just these two breeds, not counting all the other abandoned dogs. It’s hard to keep up with posting news about them all – I want to let you all know what is going on every day, what the volunteers cope with every day, and this is another story. I’ve translated it but it’s not perfect – but I’m sure you’ll get the gist of the report! Simply haven’t time to correct it, sorry!

We find this galguita, Nana, in very poor condition, would not have lasted more than two days in the street. She was rescued ten days ago, and is in the vet clinic. There has been a dramatic change as seen in the last photo, the skin is healing and is starting to repair. An association offered us help but the bill has Been tremendous so they cannot cover all the expenses.

Nana is in the care of Pro-Galgo, more information here about donating towards her vet care.

Royal Canin is not really good… she should get real meat… in the best case raw green tripe. Otherwise some other meat.
I know they have enough to worry about but nevertheless, good food is very important (and would not necessarily be more expensive than the industrial one).
I read in the book of an Austrian vet, that all these special diets are definitely not worth the money!

I have tried these special diets at huge expense, and they are a waste of money, I agree with Tunde, natural diet is probably best for Nana.
Sadly, if she has generalised demodecosis, as her medical record suggests, her prognosis is not that good, unless it has become generalsied only due to her immune system being defective due to other infections and starvation. If this is an inherited immunity defect, it would be kinder to euthanase now. My heart sinks for her and I am praying that she can be cured.

Milk might not be best when her immune system is depressed, as some dogs have milk intolerance. This could place even more strain on her weak immunity and allow the demodex to thrive. Tuna has high mercury content so needs to be used very sparingly. Sardines are better, but perhaps Nana would do better on a fairly bland diet at present to avoid any immune challenges. Chicken would be good, but perhaps too expensive. There may be an underlying medical cause for the demodex in addition to weakened immunity. She is so beautiful, my heart goes out to her.
