Latest news and pix of my beautiful disabled galgo pup Polar –
At last summer has arrived in France – sunshine instead of showers and more showers – finally got the shorts and t-shirts out! The French say it is the worst summer on record.
So the dogs are enjoying days spent soaking up the sunshine, especially Polar, who was born in February and was dumped at the gates of Pepis Refuge whilst they were still recovering from two heavy mud slides last autumn.
Yesterday I gave all the dogs a big dog chew and Polar decided to pick the muddiest spot in the courtyard in which to bury it!
I also bought him a toy – he’s currently been playing tug o’war with Bracken’s rope. They had great fun running around the courtyard together until they finally collapsed exhausted!
Bracken is a star. He arrived a couple of years ago from Tina Solera of Galgos del Sol. He’d been in foster and arrived with ASBOs (Anti social behaviour orders) from his foster mum because he was young, loved chewing shoes, leads, harnesses, stealing food…
Now he is 4 and Polar’s best buddy. He puts up with having his ears pulled, legs pulled, tail pulled, jowl pulled – Polar saying ‘come on, mate, let’s play’ – and never once has Bracken turned on Polar. And it’s as though he knows that Polar is disabled – Polar doesn’t know he’s disabled, injured in the first couple of weeks of his life. They run and play but Bracken seems more gentle with Polar than when he played with my lovely Sahara, his previous playmate who died of cancer in February.
Pepis recently lost the financial help of a Belgian galgo association so they now desperately need funds to buy food for all their dogs – please help them – donate here. Adopt one of their lovely dogs – if they don’t get help, they may have to close.
Enjoy the pix.

Gorgeous!
Could you adopt me, please? I’m very clean and don’t bark or bite.
Kate, Id happily adopt you if you lived up the lane from me! x
He is lovely, lucky boy! Why have Pepi’s lost the help help of the Belgian Galgo Association? That is really sad. Is there any other Association who could help them? It is a terrible thing if they have to close.
donated a little today and will donate again next mon polar and bracken look as though they are enjoying every minute
Pepis lost the help because the money sent to them for feeding the galgos they also used to help feed the other dogs, so I am told. What should they have done – feed the galgos whilst the other dogs went without? For me, it is a black mark against the Belgian association that they themselves would not find another association to help feed the non galgo dogs. Just abandoned them. Jane and Alan live in the campo, surrounded by hunters who dump their dogs on them, tie them to the gates, throw them over the fence. What are they to do? Throw the dogs back?! The dogs are everything to them and they need a couple of associations to support them and help find foster and adopting homes. Some of the Pepis dogs have been there since puppies. Ive just helped get a podenco to a foster
home; he was dumped as a puppy, lived in the house until other puppies needed the space, so had to go out into the kennels. He was upset by the move out to the kennels, lost weight….Jane and Alan have enough to cope with, without being abandoned by those in a position to help. At the end of the day, its about the dogs, all their dogs. Please raise awareness of their plight and get help for them, in any way. Thanks for caring, you are a star.
That just seems wrong to me. All the dogs need help there. So in effect they have abandoned them and none of the dogs get fed, including the galgos. I have put something through for them today but I know that what they need is significant financial support from an association.
Hi Beryl, I was just wondering if there is a contact for the Belgium Galgo Association where objections could be politely raised, or would this make things worse?
I think it would make things worse, which is why I haven’t mentioned the name of the association. We need to concentrate on finding other help for Pepis both financially and for dog adoptions. thanks for caring.
