Irish Greyhounds being exported to Spain for racing

Greyhound Rescue Association Ireland (GRAI) has been informed that Spanish buyers were seen buying greyhounds two weeks ago at the Thurles Sales in Ireland. They bought 20 Greyhounds to take back to Spain for racing. The greyhounds are now kennelled somewhere in Co. Tipperary. We have been informed that when their passports are in order they will be transported to Southern Spain, either Andalucía or to Extremadura.

Extremadura has a very bad history of abusing Galgos (Spanish Greyhounds). It is big hunting country. An oval track has been built but is not yet licensed so no official betting is allowed. However, it is likely that racing will start as soon as the dogs are in place.

In the present climate more Irish greyhounds are likely to be exported abroad as the demand for them decreases in Ireland and the breeders/trainers look for new markets.

Every is being urged to sign and share the petition and to raise awareness and as much publicity as possible to highlight the plight of these greyhounds.

Once in Spain they will have little possibility of finding homes when their short racing life is over and they will be in a country with poor animal welfare standards and a track record of abusing Galgos.

Thanks for your support!

Does anybody know how these greyhounds will be than transported, the spaniards mentioned in 2012 that they will travel by air, but knowing them they will send them off by a vessel without air, total darkness and no water or food. They have been done this in the past with the greys. Yes, this is the worst aera for any sighthound to touch ground, extrem rural and barbaric. I am afraid the greys will face a very bleak and terrible life their. I am so upset, that IGB and the rest of breeders give a damn what happens to the greys, and they should know better. I wish these people the pain and torture the greys and other sighthounds face each day.

if they bought the greys just 2 weeks ago, all animals travelling from Irland must have valid vaccination, as for rabies they cannot transfer the greys within the 2 weeks, espec.under the new law when animals travel through GB and EU countries. I am afraid some vets out there are willing to comply and cheating on the requirements needed. Who is watching this transport should they leave Irland to enter another country, are the department of agriculture or an official vet is present, I doubt very much, that a local vet complies with the regulation, everyone wants his money out of the greys, which they never seeing these countries, born to suffer and cruelties. Are some Irish rescue groups keep an eye on this?

Jenny while I am asking eyerbody I know to sign the petition, many rescues here in Germany especially those involved with sighthounds don’t even mention it, there some greyrescues getting their greys from IGB delivered to the doorstep, so you may know why they are avoiding it. Friends of mine just openend their rescue shelter for greys are the only ones that regulary report on the plight of greys, they rescue from irish dogpounds and pay these people whatever it takes to have them ready for travel, so I am more inclined to help such rescues, just make 22 coats for the shelters greys live in, awaiting their chance to be adopted. Jenny it is never ending and so much to do protecting our sighthounds from the claws of evil monsters. But the poor souls have only us to protect them and raise our voice.
But I am very disappointed over this reaction.

I have signed the petition. These people have no moral compass whatsoever. They clearly don’t see the dogs as anything other than lumps of meat, machines to make money from. These people are rotten and clearly have no qualms about sending the dogs to their horrible fate. It will be a miserable existence for them and an untimely death. Nothing matters to these people apart from money, money, money. Rotten people they are with no care for the welfare of the dogs. Also, all that will happen as racing tracks close in this country, is that the dogs will be transported abroad to an even worse fate, where there is no hope for them whatsoever. Because stopping the racing in this country will not stop these breeders from looking for new markets for the dogs.

kathrina i have just emailed annie of afg to see if she had any news she will be giving it her all to try and stop this from happening with other rescues involved so i will let you know when she gets bskc to me ye i have said this for a long time kathryn this as always been my fear that if it stops here then they will send the greys and start somewhere else and yes it is far worse for them and so hard for us to reach them elswhere im sure there is a rescue in the 2 areas mentioned in southern spain that could rescue them but will need the help of other people to home them it will be the only shot these poor souls will have so every one will have to stick together and help in what way we can if this happens

    Beste mensen.

Hello everyone, these are the email addresses for the Minister of Agriculture and IGB Chair – adrian.neilan@igb.ie and minister@agriculture.gov.ie
I have just sent an email urging them to stop this transport – I kindly ask Minister Simon Coveney and Adrian Neilan, IGB Chair, to intervene urgently to stop the transport of Irish Greyhounds to Spain this month and finally put an end to Greyhound exports to Spain, a country widely condemned for the abuse of sighthounds and then I have put my own views in. This has come from the petition, asking people to email to raise their objections. I don’t know what good it will do but at least it is better than nothing and if they get lots of emails about this then they will know how many people object. I am going to find out the addresses and write a letter to them asking for a response.
