Matt Lightfoot reports from Portugal.
Portugal has just approved a new law for animal cruelty (up to 2 years in prison) and for animal abandonment { up to 6 months in prison}. I was told it was only for ‘companion` animals, but see below Ines Canavarro of Portugal Dog Rescue says it is for all animals. There is an online petition to try and change it,

Signed and commented. The hunting dogs should have the same protection, they are no different to other dogs. Absolutely disgraceful how they are treated.
Beryl I’m not sure who gave you this info, but the new law applies to ALL ANIMALS, obviously including hunting dogs. The petition in the link refers to a case of a man that used to rent dogs to hunters, who managed to get rid of them before the authorities came in. Just be aware the new law, like the previous, never distinguished between pet and working dogs.
Hi Ines, I copied all the information and link from a post on my facebook page Save the Galgo from another Portuguese dog rescue association – so thank you for confirming the law applies to all Animals, that is marvellous. I’ll correct the information on Save the Galgo.
What is the matter with these people…..makes me so angry. Have signed.
