The Shame of Spain – Fermin of Scooby speaks out

The shame of Spain – Fermin writes.

In the last month Scooby have taken 20 galgos from the Valladolid perrera to add to the hundreds of dogs they already have. Asociacion Baasgalgo have taken 24 from the Badajoz perrera and volunteers are feeding another 30 on the streets, 112carlotagalgos have taken 8 from a gitano camp, Pepis Dog Refuge have taken in 8 in the last 3 weeks, including 2 injured needing vet operations. That’s just 5 rescues in one month – multiply that by the hundreds of refuges around Spain full to capacity – and that’s before I start listing the dozens dumped in the perreras every week which are killed before there is room in a shelter for them. And STILL the hunters say there isn’t a problem!

I estimate numbers are now heading for 120,000 in the past year.

The situation is worse this year than ever and the national and provincial governments and hunting federations don’t give a damn! For those of you who haven’t already read it, this was a letter to the galgueros which I wrote in March 2013. Fermin has recently sent this to his galguero contacts.

My anger threatens to consume me – such senseless waste of precious life.

Shame on the galgueros who commit this sin and the vets who cooperate with them.
Shame on all who witness this and keep silent about the crime.

This is so upsetting. I just don’t think things will change unless the governing bodies get strict and there are licences and strict procedures to follow for these galgueros and as Jen, was saying in previous posts, limited breeding. However, the governing bodies have to actually care first, which clearly they don’t in most cases. I don’t know what we here in the UK can do, apart from to letter write, sign petitions, donate and support the rescues. So sorry for Scooby, Pepis, Charl and all the other rescues who have to pick the pieces up at great cost to them. The same is going on in other countries too. It’s like a genocide for dogs in Romania too. It’s all very, very upsetting but what the solutuion is and how to implement it, I really don’t know.

beryl your right such a waste of precious life hence why the law needs to bring the ban of galgos and podencos in now this breed because of the mass breeding and loss of sweet life it shouldnt be like this for them its just one case after another and i really dont think the letters are going to make a difference at all they will probably laugh at the letters we send and if you get a reply it will be just basick like i got from the spanish pres about 4 year ago maybe aa little lonnger got it some where and will have date on it i got basically there is rescues out there to take care of the situation not a mention of the breeding to be banned and it went on to say other things will hunt out when i can i post to this blog and tell you word for word what it says and had no reply re the situation in spain from any one i sent letters to yet why is it such a long drawn out process with these poor animals while they are busy deciding if this is worth bothering with there is more animals getting tortured and killed if they wanted something sorted of thier interests it would be donr in a flash so why not for the animals is most people blind are they death are they motionless are they souless what is the problem
