Near death rescue in Romania

Romania galgo 250 26 3 2016I first wrote about galgos in Romania some 5 years ago, and last September there was the threat that Romania would open a greyhound racing stadium.  Recent reports suggest it has not so far come to fruition.  Here is a story about a galgo/greyhound in Romania, luckily now rescued and receiving care and treatment in a vet clinic.

This dog was spotted about 2 weeks ago on a field, between 2 villages. He seemed to be weaken, he was scared and would not allow people near him. A friend of ours saw him every evening and tried to get close but the dog wouldn’t have it. About a week ago, she managed to catch the dog and take him straight to the vet clinic, he was so weak and hungry that he was eating dry grass on that field.

He got a name and emergency medical care, the dog was extremely thin and his body was full of deep, painful wounds. From now on, his name is Flash and he will be loved and cared for and his life will never be in danger again!

Flash could barely stand when he got to the Vet clinic, so he immediately got intravenous infusions and the doctors started to clean his wounds. As you can see in the pictures, his body is full of them, some are deeper than others, some are infected and some are very painful. He’s been at the clinic for a whole week now, getting intensive treatment: antibiotics, anti-inflammatory and vitamins shots, good food, and a warm and safe place where he can sleep as much as he needs in order to recover. Even though we put him on a dog food diet as soon as he arrived at the clinic, he would still poop dry grass 4 days later. That’s what he was eating all the time before he was found.

Romania galgo head 250Flash is a young beautiful Greyhound, he is about 4 years old, and he was probably abandoned because he didn’t fulfill someone’s needs, as this breed is mainly used for hunting. He seems to have had a hard life, his previous owner probably didn’t take care of him too much. We don’t know how long he’s been on that field, he also doesn’t have a microchip so we can’t identify the owner… all we know is that he was thrown away like trash and his life was a hell until we saved him.

He is not friendly with other dogs, so he probably got most of his injuries while fighting for food or territory. We will work on his attitude and will try to get him to be more trusting, but the most important thing for now is curing his many wounds and getting his strength back.

Flash will need to stay in the clinic for at least 1 more week, because his wounds need to be cleaned daily and he also needs daily shots and bandages on his deep wounds.

We need your help to pay for his medical bills and his care, any donation, no matter how small, matters a lot for us and for the recovery of Flash!  Paypal: make@piecesofheaven.org Romania galgo 3 250

Thanks for saving Flash´s life a few things This greyhounds has likely never been socialised with other breeds of dogs. You might be able to identify him have a look for tatooes in both his ears. There is a database where greyhounds are registred its called the greyhound database you might be able to find his pedigree there ie former owner or breeder. the website is as follows;www.greyhound-data.com if you would like help to identify him I will gladly help. you can email me here grey4dk@yahoo.com

@Lisbeth not all Greys that arrivee to Romania come from Ireland. I have been informed that a greyhound breeder from Germany sends his Greys to Romania, these Greys have not ear tatoes. I am not certain if he registered his greys at the greyhound-data or just sells them without. I asume he is known among the local Greyhoud breeders. If you wish I can give you further information to a person that might help you.

I would like to send some modest help to Flash, but would be happy to know who or what organization is recieving it. The PayPal address is not enough.

    Hi all,
First of all thank you for posting the story of rescuing Flash. My boyfriend and I found him on the field and took him to the vet. He is now in the care of Pieces of Heaven, a rescue organisation from Timisoara, Romania. I know them personally, we live in the same city. You can read more about them and see their incredible rescue track record on their Facebook page. I’m also happy to provide more info about them.
Flash has no tatto that would allow us to track the breeder or previous owner. He is now in a dog pension to allow his wounds to heal. After that we can start looking for a new owner or a foster at first.
Thanks for your interest and your donations.
You will be able to see how he is doing by following his album.
