Bracken – A Galgo’s Story

Bracken head 400I’ve been involved in galgo and podenco rescue and rehoming since 2007 when the plight of the galgos and podencos was little known outside of Spain and the Canary Islands, long before the days of facebook. Vie my blogs Galgo News and Podenco Post I’m proud to have helped set two amazing young English women on the path to becoming two of the best known rescue and rehoming associations through advertising for homing dogs they had rescued before they formed their associations. I’ve fostered many galgos and podencos, indeed I’m a failed foster mother too as 2 of my galgos are in my home forever.

This video tells the story of one of my ‘failed’ fosters. It’s an old video, as Brac’s story has moved on. Some months after we took him to his ‘forever’ home in the UK, sadly through no fault of either Bracken nor his adoptant, we received an email from them to say that because of serious illnes, they had to return their newly adopted galgo and also a tripod greyhound they had adopted. As soon as my husband read that, he booked a ferry across the Channel, stayed overnight with a very good friend, drove up to meet with Bracken and bring him back to our home in France. He’d really wanted to keep Bracken himself so although sad for the couple who were heartbroken to say goodbye to him, he was pleased to welcome Bracken back into our canine fold.

Besides pinching sausages from the bbq, there is also a funny story about a lemon cake! One day I’d made a lemon drizzle cake as friends were calling round to introduce me to two puppies they had rescued and adopted whilst wintering in Spain. I totally forgot about the cake until I went into the kitchen to make a pot of tea…and found only a few yellow crumbs on the plate on the worktop!! Some months later a friend ‘animal communicator’ was visiting and I asked her if she could get Bracken to tell her how he injured his leg. She knew nothing about the lemon cake story! Bracken told her he had damaged his leg escaping from the galguero. He added at the end of the story ‘and I really liked that lemon cake’! How accurate was that?!

Bracken is now 7 years old, getting a little more grey in the face but really enjoying playing and walking with his buddy Polar. The Spanish vet did an amazing repair on his damage leg joint, there is only a slight scar. However when Bracken wants attention and sympathy, up comes the right leg, just as he holds it up in the video!

Ah he’s beautiful and very lucky boy to be with you. My greyhound steals boiled eggs. I put a plate down on the floor just for a minute while I answered the phone and when I came back the eggs were gone, shells and everything. The egg cups were still upright though, so he must have very delicately taken them out without upsetting the egg cups or the plate. Then there was the look of “who me?” that he gave me! My fault though for leaving food in the immeidate vicinity of a greyhound!
