(SWanchez) This is what life is like at Pepis Dog Refuge for Jane and Alan Brian. In 2005 they moved to Spain for a retirement life, instead this is what they cope with 24/7/365. Neither of them are in the best of health, but they carry on caring for the dogs the local Spanish throw out. They survive only on donations. Jane writes. ‘Being a legal refuge, you are limited to how many dogs you can take, this alone is a problem. WHY, because Seprona the guardia civil can prosecute you for having over your quota, because it is illegal to do that,so we are here and easy targets. BUT it is also illegal to dump dogs,and when they do we have to deal with it/ Do we untie them and let them go to be shot or starve to death. NO we don’t, we deal with it.
BUT who is going to prosecute the people who dump them? NO ONE, because you have to prove they dumped them, no chip no proof. The law is useless.
That being said, the dogs can be removed and destroyed. Welcome to Spain.
15/1/2017 – Two new arrivals this weekend. We had finished cleaning and feeding the dogs, had cuddles and kisses lol. Feeling hungry we decided to pop to the village and grab some crusty bread, driving back past the refuge…we find this poor little lad…we had been no more than 5 minutes so we think we were being watched…and the hunter grabbed the chance to abandon him. Look how thin he is. We have named him Sanchez….A warm bed, food and water…and worm tablets given.
After another long day, finally we got to bed…then I was woken by someone shouting Pepi, (my local nickname) not sure I was dreaming, I listened…sure enough I heard right, a quick look at the bedroom clock…what the heck !!! it’s 2am.
Panic stricken, exactly as I was, (in pjs) I went out to see whats going on..a local hunter stood by his car with a galgo. He said ‘he does not have Galgos, he uses Podencos and other hunting breeds”. The story goes that he had been out drinking with mates and found this Galgo in the road and it was freezing…minus 2 degrees. He knew the local police would be closed as were the vets..his thoughts turned to Pepis Refuge for help….
We took her down to the refuge and settled her in with lots of blankets, some food and water for the night. We have named her Kiara. Another mouth to feed…but never mind, she is safe now…and warm.
