A couple of years ago Pepi’s Refuge was hit by the parvo virus, resulting in a huge vet bill. This year they were hit by distemper. With so many dogs in the refuge and donations dropping considerably, there was not the money to vaccinate against the disease. 3 galgos died, Jane Brian is still giving medication to several others. This week she was rushed into hospital with severe pains. She is now back at the refuge, on medication but still giving medication to the dogs – the dogs always come first with Jane and Alan.
Things have never been so dire at the refuge. On one hand we have fewer dogs than we have in a long time, on the other there’s no money to feed them, let alone get them prepared for transport. Donations have never been so slow and despite Alan and Jane using their pensions week in and week out, the pot is empty. The distemper that rampaged through the refuge has amounted to a huge vet bill that we simply cannot pay. And whilst it is unpaid we cannot take any other dogs to get them prepared to travel to foster and forever homes.
In an ideal world all the dogs would be vaccinated as soon as they enter the refuge to stop this kind of thing happening but if you only have €20 in the pot, do you vaccinate one or feed the many others relying on you. Alan and Jane are at breaking point. Every day is a massive struggle and it shouldn’t be. Neither are in the best of health and instead of being able to put their feet up they are working or worrying.
So please, if you can spare even €1 then now is the time to donate it. It would be hugely appreciated and a huge weight off their minds. PayPal is pepis.dogrefuge@yahoo.co.uk
If you can organise a fundraising event, please do. How about a fun dog walk with a rosette to each dog. Or a stall at a car boot sale. Please help. The dogs need Jane and Alan, and Jane and Alan need your help to help the dogs.
Thank you
