5th June 2017 – Olivenza Perrera, Badajoz, Extremadura, Spain closes down

After many years of outrage at the treatment of dogs in the privately managed Olivenza Perrera in Badajoz, Extremadura, Spain, today closes its doors, as its licence has not been renewed. The Diputación does not know what to do. That is the answer that have given TODAY protector of Extremaduran animals and veterinarians on the relocation of the 104 dogs that are in the kennel of Olivenza and that the provincial institution has to remove before Tuesday. On Monday the contract with the kennel expires and its owners have decided to close the premises.

The Diputación intends to open the kennel of Azuaga, some facilities that are of the Board of Extremadura, and to transfer there to the animals that collect in the province. As the procedures for the assignment of these facilities have not yet been resolved, the Diputación has tried the kennels of the province and several protectors to ask them to take the dogs they have in Olivenza.

In the province, there are only kennels in four municipalities: Badajoz, Almendralejo, Merida and Don Benito. In the capital of the capital there are currently about twenty dogs and their facilities only have 22 cheniles. Mérida and Almendralejo, according to the protectors, are saturated, and Don Benito can not enter dogs at the moment because their facilities were burned in a fire two months ago and have not yet been repaired.

To this is added the appeal that some of the region’s protectors are making, with the federation at the front, so that they do not accept to welcome animals of the Delegation if this does not change its model of collection and management of the abandoned animals.

The Diputación, says the letter that they are promoting: “It has done nothing to solve the problems of substance. He has articulated the solution to the case of Olivenza in a way that seems an urgent situation, which morally and emotionally coerces the protectors to accommodate the animals that are in Olivenza ».
In his opinion, the Diputación de Badajoz is trying to discharge its responsibility on animal protectors, presenting the situation as an emergency. Before this, they ask that no one take charge of the animals that are in the kennel of Olivenza, if the Diputación does not commit before to change the system of attention of the animals collected by laceros of the province.

Municipal management

In this sense, one of the proposals is that it is the municipalities of the province that manage the collection and care of abandoned animals in the municipality. This would facilitate the task of receiving and adopting dogs in front of the current centralized system, where one or two protectors are assigned the task of finding a home for animals throughout the province. They fear that the announced transfer of the provincial kennel to Azuaga is also a transfer of the same problem that has been reproduced in Olivenza.

They also criticize the lack of awareness campaigns about the abandonment of animals by the Diputación and dismay their unconcern for the health of the animals collected by laceros.

The third way to relocate the animals would be for the Diputación to pay for the accommodation of their animals in some canine residence. The cost, in this case, would range between 120 and 150 euros per animal per month, plus food costs.

Meanwhile, the Diputación reiterated yesterday that it continues working to relocate the dogs. The veterinarian of the provincial institution was yesterday in Olivenza collecting data and images of all the animals. For their part, those responsible for the kennel confirmed that the Diputación continues without giving information on the destination of the animals that shelter in their facilities.

Mairena perrera

This was also a privately run perrera where the dogs suffered horrendously and which was eventually closed. Mo reports on what happened to the dogs thereafter.

‘Mairena was bad solution, many dogs escaped, many went into bad hands and even ended up in perreras again. And other were just taken to make a selfie “I was in Mairena, I rescued” and then dropped at other shelters.

In Olivenza, for years, most of the dogs were reserved for foreigners. Even local adoptants were rejected.
Thanks to many foreign rescuers it was nearly impossible to get insider infos, the rescuers protected the PERRERA owner claiming they fear not being allowed anyone to rescue there if they say something…All these people who helped the owner to continue with this horrible business should be taken to court with her.
