Update on galgo Arkos – not good news

Arkos leg 2 400
Well, it’s been a day of surprises…. and not really very good ones at that! As you all know Arkos went in for what we thought was his surgery on his damaged hock. But, before going ahead, the Specialist decided he needed his own, more definitive X-rays of the the whole leg and… low and behold…a further, even older serious injury was discovered. So, in addition to the injury to the hock, this poor long suffering dog has also suffered a cruciate ligament injury (we don’t know when). This really needs to be done before the fractured Calcaneus procedure can be performed.

So, following X-rays and tests today, Arkos will have the Cruciate Ligament surgery tomorrow and the op originally planned for today will be performed when the Cruciate Ligament procedure has had time to heal, in about 6 weeks time!

Obviously, this is bad news in every way, but we feel that Arkos has suffered all his life and he deserves every chance to experience life as it SHOULD be for a loved Galgo, so we have made the decision to go ahead and use the money that has already been so kindly donated by many of you. We sincerely hope that everyone who donated won’t mind?

Unfortunately, that also means that we will have to beg AGAIN for the Calcaneus procedure originally planned for. The cost of the knee surgery, plus (pre and post op) Xrays x 4 , €80 each (plus cost of some transport trips to the Specialist’s surgery) will cost €1,140. So, having allocated the €1080 already donated, Arkos will now need a further €1,140 for the Original op. (Calcaneus procedure plus extra X-Rays).

Can we dare hope that this can be achieved for him ????

PLEASE, CAN YOU DONATE A LITTLE TOWARDS THE COST OF TRAUMA SURGERY THAT WILL GET ARKOS, OUR GALGO RESCUE BOY, OUT OF PAIN AT LAST?

HE NEEDS €1,080… WHICH WE SIMPLY DON’T HAVE!

So sorry, yes, this is another begging post… I know there are many more, but we have no choice if Arkos, a 5 year old Galgo, who clearly gave his all, is to ever know life without agony. He was found wandering the streets, one ear had been cut off and an injury to one eye, which cannot now be fixed. As if that wasn’t enough, he also suffered from bronchial pneumonia.

He was also limping very badly! He clearly had nothing left to give to his hunting owner….so…
We couldn’t not try and help this gentle boy. He responded well to veterinary treatment for all his treatable ailments over time. Of course, we kept him on pain relief during all this time for his damaged leg. Arkos really didn’t like to be on his own in a kennel, so we let little Miriam (one of our Rescue dogs from the Hoarder) join him. Miriam truly looked after him and Arkos is now genuinely in love with her. Both are now totally inseparable.

X-rays we had taken of his injured leg seemed to puzzle the vets. So it had to be a Trauma Specialist. He deserves it. The Specialist diagnosed a fractured Calcaneus in the back leg, as well as the damaged Calcaneal tendon. Obviously left untreated, both had healed badly. It was clearly an injury caused by violent, blunt trauma or having to pull up sharply or turn whilst at speed!

The Specialist is confident that he can perform surgery that will not only get Arkos out of constant pain, but it will also avoid the trauma of a leg amputation! We fear that such a disabling Op would simply be one trauma too many for him to cope with. The planned op will involve taking some bone from the hip and add it to the Calcaneus with a plate and screw fixation. Arkos should be able to use the leg and be free of pain in about a month.

The normal cost of this type of surgery is €1,800, but the Specialist has offered to perform it for Arkos, a Rescue Galgo, at the reduced cost of €1,080. Please, will you help us make it possible for him?
