Adopting a dog – patience and more patience

Reminder for adopting a dog 400 5 2019

We adopted our 2 podencos at the beginning of December 2021. Both 8 years old. Blind Bo has certainly had a rough life; he now knows his way outside into the garden to the toilet, and his way back in. But he is reluctant to come off his bed out of the kitchen into the rest of the house. Even a snuffle mat filled with treats doesn’t tempt him. But we are winning insofar as he loves car trips – he’s very confident walking up the dog ramp into the back of the car!

Rosely – we can’t work out the reason for her fear. Unsurprisingly she is frightened of men, but she also has issues with food – it’s taken a few months for her to be confident going to her food bowl to eat. Quite a change from most of our previous Spanish rescues who have been starved, lived on the campo, been in a perrera and who loved their regular meals! However, her character is developing and she’s a delightful little podenca with people she knows.

Patience is needed with rescue hounds, sad we can’t speak dog and learn what they have been through before rescue.

My little 37lbs galgo, my second, also seemed afraid to eat when I first brought her home. She would skulk off if I offered her food. Sometimes she would try to hide it. I wondered if she had dealt with a lot of competition for food, or even been attacked by other dogs…?
