  • Galgos 112 – full to bursting but still they find room for abandoned galgos

    Galgos 112 brothers 1 400
Hunting in Spain finished at the end of January and of course the Shelters are all full. And with the Spanish hunters not letting up on their overbreeding of their dogs, the situation year on year foes not change.

    Galgos 112 say this.

A few weeks ago we had to make the hard decision to close our doors to new dogs at least until some of the Galgos and Podencos we have are fostered or adopted by a family.

We can’t keep helping more dogs for two reasons:

    1. Out of space for the dogs.
    2. Lack of economic capacity to cover all your expenses.

Since then we have only attended to some urgent cases to which it was impossible to say no, and they have also arrived at Galgos 112 these two galgos, we believe they are brothers, that someone left tied up at the door of one of the residences we collaborate with. We couldn’t stop helping them.

Their names are Barry and Otis, they are two 3-year-old galgos, unidentified, sociable and not afraid of people. They are healthy and their vet protocol is almost complete. They are available for adoption

  • April – Adopt a greyhound/galgo month

In the very beginning of my involvement with galgos in Spain and working with Charl del Rio who later founded 112garlotta galgos. I published an appeal for homes for 2 galgas rescued by Charl from a perrera. Angela Yardley contacted us and subsequently adopted them both.

This is an appeal from Forever Hounds Trust established by Angela about adopting one of the Trust’s greyhounds.

  • Injured galga now safe with Protectora Scooby

    Scooby galga 1400 16 3 2023
    From Cobie Steketee at Scooby.

‘2 Weeks ago Scooby saved 5 galgos from the perrera provincial from Valladolid. This poor girl who was left there was very, very skinny and with several big infected wounds for which she gets treatment now. She is placed in a special “skinnies” kennel where they get a lot of special food so they can recuperate extra fast.

We have named her Mailen and so far she is doing very well.

  • Give rescue dogs space and time to adjust to a new home

    Carmela 400
We’ve always had rescue dogs – that’s 70+ years of living with rescue dogs! Some adjust to home life reasonably easily, others take much longer. The longest for me was my galga Carmela who took about 2 1/2 years to become a ‘normal’ dog, even though she lived with 4 others!

Last year some neighbours adopted a small terrier mix. He’d already had one home, this was his second. He was typical terrier, always on the go, needed exercise but also needed to socialise with other dogs, as he always barked at them. We used to take our dogs to a local dog park meet so I suggested they brought Billy with them , once a week meets. Sadly they didn’t, they didn’t walk him, in fact hardly seemed to do more than just keep him at home and in the garden. I didn’t see them for a few months and when I finally did, I asked about Billy. ‘Oh, we took him back, he nipped one of our visitors’. I walked away rather than say what I was thinking!!!

Here’s a story about a resce dog illustrating just how much care and thought has to go into adoting a rescue dog.

I do hope Billy’s next home after our neighbours’ was a forever one with people who understood him and his needs.

  • Forgive me, mommy

    Dog
I was there where you left me for two whole days. Sleeping right on the side of the road. I was terrified of the noise from the cars but I did not move.

Last night one of those cars stopped and she got out. She invited me to lunch but I said no. She invited me to come sleep at her house and I also said no. I tried to explain to her that I was waiting for you but she wouldn’t listen.

She pulled out a leash and said I couldn’t stay there any longer. I bit her several times and ended up peeing on myself as I growled and cried! She didn’t understand that she was separating me from you! She took me against my will and we drove off! I was so sad because I knew you were going to be worried. We ended up at her house.

I kept screaming hoping you would hear me but you never came. I vomited because of my nerves, feeling so sick. I kept telling her I had to go back because you were going to think I abandoned you when you saw I wasn’t there! I, who love you with all my heart and soul have not stopped crying since we separated a few days ago. I want you to know, I would never do that to you.

I don’t know where you are now or why you stopped the car and left me there. Surely you had something very important to do. Can you come find me now, mommy?

Today I ate because my tummy was hurting. I also slept on a very soft bed. And by accident I also wiggled my tail a bit. I’m so sorry, please forgive me.

She’s just being really nice to me. She said I could stay forever. She’s calling me Milo but I already have a name. When you pick me up you can tell it to her. You’ll see how surprised she’ll be when you explain to her that this was a big mistake.
Because mommy, you’re coming back for me, right?

  • Tijuana, Mexico – greyhounds race nearly every day!

    Grateful greyhounds 400
    From Grey2kusa.

Greyhounds at the above racetrack race nearly every day! A siught mprovement for 2024, they will race only 3 days/week. 3 days/week is too much, the track should be closed down! I can’t believe Mexicans can afford to bet on dog racing every day either!

Read about it on this weblink.

So now many of the dogs will be released for adoption. Read this story on this weblink.

  • Galgos Rescue Almeria – always there for the galgos and podencos

GRA Make 2024 better for us 400
    From Sandy Galgoslover

2023, a year of ups & downs, joy & sadness, but also a year in which new collaborations were established.
Never before have so many abandoned, neglected and abused souls found their way to our Rescue center. Unfortunately, never before have so many animals been abandoned and dumped either….

If there is any improvement in people’s awareness animals are living beings and not products, we still notice little or nothing of it.

On the contrary, it seems to be getting worse….

  • Galgo Santo – deserves his forever home

    Moni Ka Polar lookalike 400 11 2023
Santo – large (when grown) male Galgo, estimated year of birth: 2023.
    In the sanctuary since: 12/11/2023

A family were shopping and when they left, they took a short cut to arrive earlier. As if by fate, they saw a dog in a bad condition (very thin and walking very slowly). As they had been shopping, they decided to throw him some food. As they approached however.m, the poor dog collapsed into them, could barely stand (he probably only had hours to live) and did not want the food they were offering. He also had several wounds on him. They tried to get him but he appeared as if he wanted to run away, scared they might hurt him but his weak body wouldn’t let him and he fell to the ground.
