I find it very difficult to believe just how many galgas are used simply as breeding machines, producing a litter of pups every year. It also makes me very angry. There are too many galgos in Spain, without breeding more. And yet the authorities turn a blind eye.

Some of the bitches, after having been abandoned by the galguerros, end up living on scrub land, in caves, searching for food to produce the milk for their pups. One such bitch living in a cave with her pups was recently shot dead.

Jara is one bitch who survived, lucky to be found near a refuge and taken in by the volunteers.

Yesterday in the afternoon a colleague of mine was in the house of a lady who has 40 dogs. She cannot take any more.

We are worried about these 5 babies. They are 4 months old and live in a kennel in very very poor conditions. One has a very bloody paw because the bigger ones pick on it.

Three years ago this beautiful galgo was adopted from Parque Animal in Torremolinos, Malaga, by an English couple.

Having previously been abandoned, he thought he had found his forever home.

Nearly 4 years later he finds himself back where he was, due to unforeseen circumstances out of his control and that of his adoptive parents.

This is Luz. She was wandering the streets of Jaen, hard to catch. Despite trying to catch her in many ways, including tranquillizers, the way she was finally caught was by being knocked down.

Puppy, five months old, extremely malnourished – found in appalling conditions – recovering in a foster home for a few days, but the fosterer has other dogs at his house and can only have him for a few days.

Urgently needs a forever home.

Charl has sent in stories of 3 more galgos, dumped like rubbish to fend for themselves. The mentality seems to be “galgos can hunt, they can look for food”.

Nata… another lame galgo, saved by some more “guardian angels” of the galgos.

Nata arrived at the shelter El Arca de Monzòn (Huesca) – no one knows how, but she was begging around the exterior of the refuge. Perhaps luck brought her that far.

It’s quite possible she was brought there by the same gypsies who had her because she was no good at running, for she has a wound in her front paw.

So… the sadness continues for the Spanish Galgos. Charl del Rio tells the tale of Noche.

It never ceases to amaze me how much a galo has to suffer and continues to endure, unless they reach the relative safety of a refuge. It is nothing a human would endure without giving in and complaining, or giving up totally. All galgos, when rescued, show gratefulness as only a galgo knows how.

This is the story of Noche, a galga who has endured immense suffering.

This is the night where her life was turned around and she found hands to cure her wounded body.

Two galgos looking for forever homes.

Yanis was found in Toledo, she is about 18 months old.

She is very intelligent and caring, good with cats, adores children especially sm all children.

Good in the car, housetrained, sterilised, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and her blood analysis is negative.

Jan is a galgo. He has suffered horrendously. Amongst other injuries, he had a nail in his head. He is about 10 years old. 10 years of living a life of hell as a Spanish galgo.

He has been save by the association Degalgos. They are a small association, the volunteers pay for everything from their own pockets.

Jan needs help, as he is in specialist neuro care, which will cost thousands of euros. Degalgos never usually ask for help, but this time they are asking for economic help to pay for Jan’s care.

Cristina de Luna is a volunteer withPerrikus, a refuge north of Madrid. I met Cristina when I visited the refuge last July when I took part in a rescue with L’Europe des Levriers.

It’s a small refuge, well organised, with room for 30 dogs. At the moment the shelter is totally full. And they have 18 galgos for adoption, waiting to be taken out of Spain as soon as possible.
