This video is of galgos with their owners – ask yourself, are some of these the men who perpetrate such cruelty on their dogs – if not them, then their friends…
Tara is just 1 year old and already experienced the trauma of being dumped in Badajoz perrera by her galguero. She has been rescued. Now renamed AMBER by Charl del Rio, she will be coming to 112carlotagalgos on 30/11/2013 with four other rescued galgos from Badajoz. Victor, Zach, Phoebe and Zara will be leaving the hell of the killing station too and travelling with Amber to start their new life at the finca under the loving hand of the Del Rio’s.
Poor little Zara is coming with a fractured leg and, with the cost of release fees, vaccines etc plus residency fees until pick up on Saturday not to even mention surgery for Zara, castration, other medical treatment needed the cost is massive.
You remember galga Tina at Pedrera, Seville. Here she is now on the road to recovery happily trotting around Pepis Dog Refuge looking for her breakfast!
Ines gives us the updates on galgo Duke and an appeal for financial help to pay for the cost of transporting Duke from Portugal down to Malaga to 112carlotagalgos.
‘For those of you that remember Estrela, the galga rescued last Christmas, she left behind her son, partner and younger brother at the hands of her evil owner. There was nothing we could do legally except negotiate with her owner eventually handing in all the dogs.
Duke was suffering from pneumonia and severe diarrhoea when his owner finally gave him to us but is now recovering. Not much, but a small victory for these poor galgos…
A galgo family have been rescued by Prodeanse in Seville. There are 7 puppies, 2 boys and 5 girls and will be up for adoption, together with Iris, their stunning mother, and Noa, their beautiful black galgo. This little girl is Tania.
If you wish to be considered as a forever family, please contact Loli at Prodeanse.
Have a chuckle! This is Phantom – now named Reilly and living the life of Reilly in Scotland. He was my Polar’s puppy mate at Pepis Dog Refuge back in April/May. It’s cold at night now at Pedrera; can anyone make warm waterproof dog coats for their galgos, podencos and other thin skinned dogs? Contact Jane

No doubt there will be some who read this article by Fermin who will disagree with the proposition. One way of trying to change the attitude of the galgueros is to work with them, to encourage them to improve the life of the dogs whilst in their care. And to at least ensure that not all their dogs end up abandoned and in perreras, starving, sick and injured.
During my visit to Valladolid last year, Cobie and I spent many hours discussing this issue of her caring for galgos during the ‘non-hunting season’ at the Residencia. There were young galgos not yet old enough to hunt and also half a dozen owned by a gitano – he travelled around Spain in his work for 3 months at a time. He asked Cobie to keep the dogs in the kennels – for payment – whilst he was away. He had no one to look after his dogs otherwise.
At the time, Cobie told me Fermin was extremely unhappy about the arrangement.
Whilst I was there, the gitano and his friend arrived to exercise his dogs on open land opposite the kennels. Much as I abhor the treatment meted out to thousands of galgos, these dogs were very faithful to their master, ran free but were obedient on recall.
I, like Fermin in his article, believe that there are times when associations/shelters should work with the galgueros, to get across the message that it is the hunters themselves who have to change the situation for their dogs – as they are the ones who create it.
For those of you who may disagree strongly with Fermin, please remember he is one of the most experienced of people as far as the plight of the galgos is concerned. He does not make these decisions lightly. And please do not turn away from helping Scooby – at the end of the day it is about the dogs.
Cuidad Real is a city 200 km south of Madrid. A bad place to be a galgo. This little angel was rescued on Saturday in a village in Ciudad Real. For months it was fed by a person who tried to find an association to take it, without success. Difficult to understand when she was quite obviously sick.
She is now off the street with Loli, of Pedro Munoz refuge Cuidad Animal, where there are more than 150 dogs – plus others in her home. She was riddled with fleas which has now been treated and blood analysises are being done – it is possible she has scabies or mange.
She’s been named Esperanza.
Heartfelt thanks. (No paypal address for the moment.)

Having recently said I was going to concentrate on publicising galgos and podencos already rescued and waiting for forever homes, I decided to post these galgos and a podenco on death row in Badajoz perrera – will be killed on 21 November – all under 3 years old.
