  • Keep your new dog safe…important lessons to learn

Ann Marie Payne is with SOS Animals in Coin and has become very concerned about the number of posts for lost dogs! Here’s what she writes.

‘Lately I’ve seen so many posts about newly adopted dogs escaping.

You may be excited at the idea of having a new dog, but your dog is probably terrified and will want to flee at the first opportunity.

Please try to put yourself in their mind and try to imagine this.

They may have had a miserable life and ended up in the pound, or simply might have got lost and ended up in there. The pound is not a nice place, and many struggle to survive mentally as well as physically. They go into foster and regain some of their trust, only to find themselves crated up and off to somewhere new.

  • Spain in August – the galgo thieves are already at work

21/8/2017 Last Monday night, some unscrupulous people came to steal 12 dogs, all of them galgos except one that was of brackish quality, a shelter that is in a locality of the province of Huelva (we do not specify at the request of the shelter to avoid more damage), after making two holes in the fencing that separated two herds from the shelter.

In this case, the individuals managed to get to nine of them, while another three managed to escape and returned later to the same refuge.

The people who are in charge of it are pending to present the pertinent complaint, although agents of the National Police and the Seprona are already aware in case some of this animals were known.

  • Letter to Senor Galguero revisited

In March 2013 I published this ‘Letter to Senor Galguero‘. Sadly all it expresses still applies today. The Hunting Federations have not improved matters – no controlled breeding of galgos, no mass abandonment, still keeping them in dark underground locked bunkers….what has changed is that there are now millions of Spanish people who are thoroughly ashamed of the bad press the hunters bring to their lovely country and protest vociferously every year throughout major cities in Spain.

Fermin Perez Martin of Scooby Medina presented a Spanish translation to the Federation of Galgueros when he was in dialogue with them to try and improve the situation. Needless to say, the galgueros refuse to acknowledge they cause a problem!

We must keep supporting those fighting the cruelty perpetrated on galgos by the galgueros in any way we can.

Please feel free to share the ‘Letter’but ensure that I am credited as its author.

  • PINS – galgos can join in the fun

Podenco play school 2 400I received a request from a Podenco adopter living in the Edinburgh area who wanted to meet up with other podenco people to share knowledge, experiences etc. Pam Mcleod of Podencos in Need Scotland got in touch with me to tell me about the Dog Play School in the area. Here’s the story of how it came about.

‘2 years ago I spent the day with 500 dogs in the perrera Tierra Blanca on Tenerife, and so the dream was born. I met Pacita, who, at 11 years old, had been found, heavily pregnant, caught and brought into the perrera, only to deliver 9 pups the following day, all but 2 of whom died to parvo virus. Pacita was still distraught at losing her pups and my heart broke for her. I met Pasha and Nico as well as many nameless hounds and fell in love with them all.

The next month was spent on a vertical learning curve about the practicalities and logistics of rescuing a dog from another country, and getting together the funds to fly Pacita from Tenerife to Edinburgh. Flying Fleeces was born to help raise funds and, after we got her home in February, PINS was born and, with it, the mission to make Scotland, Podenco-Central.

  • Fireworks and animals

Fireworks-40021st June is Fete de la Musique in France where many towns and villages have an evening of music in the streets, culminating with a firework display at the end. We live at the opposite end from where the event is held in our village but, even so, the sound of music and fireworks carries across to us. The display last about 20 minutes, finishing with an enormous explosion of dozens of fireworks! Bebe and Bracken aren’t bothered by the noise, Polar listens, cocks his head, trying to identify the sound. Carmela gets in a terrible state, rushing from room to room, unwilling to be held and comforted. Unusually this year my horse, out in the meadow, was unsettled by it all.

The next round of fireworks in France is 14th July, Bastille Day, luckily not celebrated noisily in our village!

4th July is Independence Day celebrations in the US, another day when fireworks play a large part in events.

In the UK it’s 5th November – Bonfire Night – but fireworks also play a part in events throughout the summer – music festivals, Picnic in the Park and so on.

So much distress caused to so many animals…
