  • Scooby – Open letter to animal protection organisations in Castille y Leon

Scooby Alma 400 6 2017Here’s a link to the Scooby News blog where Fermin asks that all animal protection associations in Castille y Leon work together to form a strong group to fight the maltreatment of animals there.

This stunning galga has been named Alma, saved from the Valladolid perrera. She has an old injury to her foreleg which was left to heal on its own! Scooby have also taken another galgo from the same perrera also with a broken foreleg and he is due to have an operation to try and repair it. They need help to pay for his vet care, along with all the other animals they recently rescued.

If you can’t have a dog or can’t adopt another one, how about a Virtual Adoption? Here are the details.

  • Beacon Dog Training – instructional videos and articles

That dog geek 400Not about galgos but about any dog. I take Polar to Obedience classes and a couple of weeks ago on the Club fb page was a video about a dog training club in Australia, where one of the proprietors is a paraplegic, which obviously involves some dog training different from non-disabled. Here is a link to their website, if anyone is interested in discussing the subject with Tom.

They also have several interesting videos, including this one on Training a Dog to obey in different situations, plus short articles with graphics.

  • Update on Polar – looking into Turmeric

The results of Polar’s recent xray unsurprisingly showed calcification of his damaged leg joint bone and arthritis. So the option of an operation to insert a prosthesis joint is negative. Since the leg doesn’t bother him nor hinder him from chasing around with his galgo housemate Bracken, the decision is to leave well alone.

Having treated him so far with MSM, I’m now looking into moving on to Devil’s Claw, which I find successful in treating my aged horses and also my first greyhound, back in the 1990’s. I’ve also been recommended to look at Turmeric, for which a retired English greyhound is being successfully treated, belonging to a friend. She purchases the product, then freezes it in a coffee bean mould and adds the required dosage to the dog’s feed daily. This is the weblink to the Turmeric under the name Golden Paste, and the coffee bean mould.

Have any readers had experience of using Turmeric for their canine?

  • Why no one should respect the Spanish galguero and cazadore

Eva Conjeal tripod 400This is a post I have taken from my Save the Galgo facebook page, posted by Eva Concejal, another Spanish volunteer fighting for a better life for the hunting dogs of her country.

This album is the continuation of these other two albums, which are already full:

Above all, Eva wants to make it clear that this album is not intended to hurt anyone, nor, of course, morbidly wallow in the terrible hardships and mistreatment of galgos (Spanish greyhounds) and podencos.

‘After some hesitation, I decided to gather this series of images as a response to all those who deny and conceal this reality, trivialize it by saying that cases of abuse and neglect of these dogs are just a few, as well as that these are perpetrated by individuals who steal the dogs from their original owners. In the sight of all these pictures, it does not look like we are talking about “4 cases”, as has been said, does it?

  • The Container Dogs case – the truth

Container dogs 400 11 2015Regular readers will remember the story a couple of years ago about the Container Dogs in Murcia and the hard work ACTIN association did, along with their lawyer, to try and get the dogs released. Sadly their work has been maligned publicly and the asso has been forced to issue yet another statement about the case.

‘Sorry to have to do this again but it still continues and it’s important for future cruelty cases in Spain, please ask people to share and spread the truth.

There is still a very bad rumour that the dogs involved in this case died, and for reasons that we don’t really understand but are currently being dealt with – the rumour says there was no case, or the dogs didn’t exist and other very damaging things.

  • Does Your Dog Have Separation Anxiety?

Here’s an article from the Whole Dog Journal on the subject.

  • Therapy Dogs Helping Axarquia Children

Therapy dogs helping children, story here. Hearing dogs, PAT dogs, Guide dogs, sniffer dogs, CPI dogs… certainly Man’s Best Friend. Which is why it makes me so angry that so many of them are mistreated by so many people.

  • Manufactured Dog Food – what is bad for your dog?

This is an article from the Whole Dog Journal on the subject of harmful dog feed.

You want the best for your dog – especially when it comes to his food. You read labels and try to choose the brand and formula that will nourish your furry friend.

That’s why you’ll be as shocked to discover that dozens of today’s top-selling brands – names you thought you could trust, like Beneful, Pedigree, Purina and more – may not contain the wholesome, healthy ingredients you want for your dog.

Take Beneful. The package makes it look like manna from heaven with a healthy pup, fresh veggies, and what look like real chunks of meat. Unfortunately, the pictures make the food seem better than it is. The reality is this stuff is AWFUL for your dog. It’s full of sugar, artificial colors, and 3 unnamed animal sources. And very little vegetables.
