There was a huge demonstration and candlelit vigil in Cadiz last week protesting about the policy of killing dogs and against euthanasia of dogs in perreras Gesser and Zoosanitaria in Jerez de la Frontera. Those of you on Facebook will have seen links to all the pix via Save the Galgo. PACMA was one of the associations involved. Here are just a few.

100,000 + galgos abandoned at the end of hunting every year – work it out for yourself!
People say the figure of 50,000 galgos abandoned every year is exaggerated – usually it’s the hunters who say so, of course, as they don’t want the bad press. Vera of Galgos en Familia, Malaga province in southern Andalucia says, ‘Co-inciding with the end of the hunting season at this time of year, more than 5.000 galgos are abandoned by hunters in our province.
It is estimated that 1,500 galgos are collected each year from the streets of Malaga province and the majority of these from the valley of Antequera, where they are used as tools to capture hares,a hunting activity that is banned in other european countries but is still very much allowed here in Spain.

Galga mama and babies in Hellin perrera, Albacete – anyone room?
Many times my heart breaks with the appeals and stories I receive each day…this is another of those times. With tears in my eyes for what this poor galga has suffered in the condition she was in.
A galga in Hellin killing station, Albacete, with 4 new born puppies. They were in the hands of some gitanos (Spanish gypsies) who threw stones at her. If they don’t get out of the perrera before they are killed, they will die in there from cold or disease. Please someone help Ari and her babies.

This appeal is from my friend Sandra Campos Cuevas of Nueva Oportunidad Sevilla.
The partners of Ochavillo del Río (Córdoba) are responsible for over 20 dogs, they only have a sack of feed. Its facilities are appalling. They also have puppies. They need food, beds, blankets, and help to spread. They need adoptions. Nueva Oportunidad Sevilla is trying to raise money, materials and medicines to take them as soon as possible. Cuenca galgo murdered February 2013
On 16th February 2013 in Horcajo de Santiago, Cuenca, this galga was brutally beaten and shot with pellets, in public. NOBODY did anything for her. By the time the Guardia Civil came, she had died. People watched and walked by as every blow was struck! Imagine her suffering! How can the person who did this and those who turned away from helping save her live with themselves! This is Spain, an ‘civilised’ Western European country, not a Third World country!
There is an appeal for witnesses so the murderer can be punished and also a petition to sign. Please support it.

Two galga pups saved from Malaga perrera, now in the US thanks to GRIN
Nice story about two lucky galgo pups saved from the El Paraiso perrera at Malaga, now in the US. April Lamb, mentioned in the article, has been working hard with Danielle Hart to try and persuade National Geographic magazine to publicise the plight of the galgos. Join in the letter-writing campaign published yesterday.
