  • Tale of a perrera dog – let it not be in vain

ACTIN logo 170Vivienne Wharton lives in Murcia and is very involved in animal welfare with her two groups. Animal Welfare Support Murcia was her original group, on Facebook. Now through ACTIN she is working on trying to change the attitude of Spanish people towards animal abandonment, mistreatment, neutering, and she has written this article about the perreras – we call them killing stations – where hundreds of dogs are put to sleep every week. Her article was prompted by the unnecessary killing of a pointer – through Facebook he had been found a home, people to donate to his care – he was due to be rescued.

I know you, dear readers, will be very moved by the article. Please show your support for the work ACTIN do by joining and adding your support.

  • CACAM Petition to stop ‘training’ galgos by motorised vehicles – please sign!

Galgos quad bike 256 11 2012You will all be aware that the Andalusian Junta intends going back to the dark ages and legalising ‘training’ galgos from a motorised vehicle. They can be tied to a bike or a car or quad and run by force – if they fall, they are dragged and suffer horrendous body burns, injuries and pain – this from the age of 6 months!!!

The ‘study’ says it’s okay whilst the vehicle does not exceed 15km. Who is going to control this speed? Who is going to police it? Remember, the dogs already are suffering physical and psychological abuse and if this measure is passed, this suffering will be exacerbated. And there are women on this Junta, who you might expect would be more sympathetic. But No!

If you haven’t already signed Danielle’s petition, please do. Danielle translated my book into French this year – a mammoth task. She is committed to the cause of the galgos; she’s aiming for 15,000 and the petition will go to the Spanish Government. The new kid on the block, Rajoy, needs to know we’re all out here!!

  • Fepaex, Badajoz, Extemadura – fighting the victims of the galgueros!

Otro Fepaex 200 10 2012Further to my piece about running galgos by motorised vehicles, here’s another sad example of a galgo dragged by a car driven by a galguero, along with other galgos. Horrendous mental and physical injuries. Luckily this one, Otro, is safe with Fepaex in Badajoz, Extremadura. But it needn’t have happened! It’s against the law!

Olivenza – the biggest private killing station in Badajoz. ‘Thursday is a good day for killing’ says the owner!

  • EU Money wasted in Spain! Classes in schools on hunting!

I’ve received the following from Mieke van Erp, to share with you. Many rescue associations are already up in arms about it.

‘This is where the money goes from The EU! There is checked in Spain and it is true but there are very few schools who want to learn the children how to hunt. So the money goes to the galgueros! I am copying some recent news about the other Spanish mafia (the other being the bullfighting one), the hunting fraternity, which will shock you I´m sure. This comes again from the unspeakable Junta de Castilla y Léon where they hold, among many other horrors, the Toro de la Vega and where the PSOE (political party from the left, not that it makes any difference) wants to subsidize all blood fiestas, this when people in Spain are going hungry and losing their homes in a fast downward economic spiral to hell.

  • El Fantasma, Seville/Cadiz – galgo in danger of injury

Cadiz galgo El Fantasma 200 car 2This beautiful boy is in the area of a gas station in El Fantasma, next to the toll of the Cabezas de San Juan and de Lebrija on the motorway Seville-Cadiz. The petrol station people say he’s been there about a month but he’s really nervous, won’t let anyone near him. Time is running out because he is going to get injured. Is there anyone in the area who could go and feed him each day, gain his trust to be able to catch him?
