  • Pepis Dog Refuge – without them the abandons would have no where to go….

I am off to Spain today for a week.  I organised a Fun Dog Show at our home in France last Sunday 4/9/2016 to raise funds for *epis – we raised a wonderful 826 euros to help pay off some of the 6,000 euro vet bills waiting payment.  This video explains why we help Jane and Alan Brian at Pepis.  They are halfway between Malaga and Seville…in the middle of the olive producing region of Sevlle.  Without Pepis, the dogs in the area…well, we don’t like to think what would happen to them..  Please support Jane and Alan in their work with the dogs at Pepis.

  • Senor Galguero – don’t break my heart

Tribute song by Val Petterson – Senor Galguero, your dogs make marvellous pets

  • Blind dogs see with their hearts – give them a home

Tracey Hayward blind galgo poem 390A beautiful poem bu Tracey Hayward

I cannot see you mummy, when you cuddle me so near.
And yet i know you love me, it’s in the words i hear.
I cannot see you mummy, when you hold me to your side.
But still i know you love me when you tell me so with pride.
I cannot see to run and play out in the sun so bright, for here inside my tiny head it’s always dark as night.
I cannot see the treats you give when I’m extra good, but i can wag my tail in Thanks just like a good dog should..
I cannot see “The dog’s no good, she can’t be trained, she will never learn or she must be put to sleep” is what some folk do say.
But not you mummy, you knew that it’s alright.
Because i love you just as much as any dog with sight.
You took me in, you give me love and we will never part.
Because I’m blind with just my eyes, I still can see with my heart..
*Dogs help us humans with our disabilities so why can’t humans help dogs with theirs?

  • Esperanza Animal Toledo – shelter closing but the work goes on!

Esperanza Animal Toledp 400 30 8 2016Toledo is a terrible place for galgos and podencos.  Over the years I’ve reported on hangings of both and in one case Asociacion BaasGalgo took the hunter responsible to court.  It costs a lot to operate a rescue shelter and volunteers are always required to look after the dogs, 24/7 7/7 and 365.   The Toledo animal shelter Esperanza Animal Toledo shelter is sadly closing but some volunteers will continue the work rescuing hounds and keeping them in residencias and foster homes – which also costs.

Veterinary costs are also high and the team urgently need help to continue their work.  Please collaborates with her with 1 € per month (or more if you can):  https://www.teaming.net/esperanzaanimaltoledo

  • Toxocara Canis – why people should clean up after their dogs/cats

We’re looking after our neighbour’s dog whilst they are away for a few days.  She lives in the back garden with access to a large cool barn.  We know they are not very good at cleaning up the garden of dog mess, but were horrified when we went in, to find just how much there was.  What makes this worse is that they entertain in the garden…and even worse, they have a 2 1/2 year old son who plays in there!

For anyone who doesn’t know about the illness Toxocara Canis, find out more on this link. Please make sure everyone you know with a dog is aware of the illness.

Needless to say, we’re cleaning up the garden whilst we are ‘in charge’.

  • Rescuing from a Perrera – advice from Mo Swatek of Pro-Galgo International

Albacete perrera 400 2 May 2011 damitai2The debate about rescuing from a perrera when not living in Spain or the Canary Islands continues to rage.  Here are words of advice from Mo Swatek of Pro-Galgo International, who recently drove 250kms to a perrera to rescue podencos and galgos with a short kill date, only to find there was no kill date for the dogs!

    RESCUING FROM PERRERAS
    **********
As the emotional blackmail and the sharing without checking the real situation is getting worse and worse, here some Suggestions how to reserve dogs from perreras without being cheated, overcharged etc.

    1.  Do not work with private people if money is involved.  Pay only to animal welfare associations or directly to the PERRERA.

    2. Always insist in the name and exact location of the place.

  • DeAnimals – fighting the corner for animal cruelty in Spain

Prohibition order Bullas 400 24 6 2016DeAnimals in Murcia continues to work hard with court cases for maltreatment of animals, plus educating the police, lawyers, judges etc on what actions to take where a case of animal neglect/maltreatment is reported.

Regular readers will remember the case of Operation Rehala – or the BULLAS rescue – where over 120 animals, mostly hunting dogs, were found living in dire conditions.  DeAnimals has pursued this case through the courts and in June 2014  here are the details of the result.

    Here’s the English translation.

  • Create a Spanish national register of animal abusers – sign the petition

Please sign and share.  It’s a petition requesting the creation of a national register of animal abusers in Spain.  Maybe if implemented it would encourage more people to make denuncias and prosecute people.  And especially go for the galgueros~!
