  • Holidays in Spain with galgos – what the tourists don’t see

Cordoba shattered galgo 350 31 1 2017Córdoba – beaten, strangled and left to die!

30/1/2017 – Hypatia, so we have named her. She was found the night of 30/01 in the middle of a road in Cordoba. Completely shattered to the head and with bites. She was still dragging the rope with which her assassin tried to kill her. No one wanted to be responsible for her so, despite being private, we have taken her to the vet in Puente Genil. Her prognosis is very serious. We don’t know if she will survive.

31/1/2017 – The prognosis this morning is not very good. Has traumatic brain injury, she’s treated with corticosteroids, mannitol and antibiotics and they’re watching as it evolves. She has a broken nose and refuses to eat. In spite of everything, has survived tonight. Has the will to fight.

We need help. Hypatia needs your help!

1 “Don’t criticize what you don’t understand, son. You never walked in that man’s shoes.”
    – Elvis Presley

  • Life on the frontline of Animal Rescue in Spain

Pepis Sanchez 2 400 (SWanchez) This is what life is like at Pepis Dog Refuge for Jane and Alan Brian. In 2005 they moved to Spain for a retirement life, instead this is what they cope with 24/7/365. Neither of them are in the best of health, but they carry on caring for the dogs the local Spanish throw out. They survive only on donations. Please join their teaming – just the cost of a cup of coffee a month – or a monthly donation of £5/5 euros. Every little helps.

Jane writes. ‘Being a legal refuge, you are limited to how many dogs you can take, this alone is a problem. WHY, because Seprona the guardia civil can prosecute you for having over your quota, because it is illegal to do that,so we are here and easy targets. BUT it is also illegal to dump dogs, and when they do we have to deal with it/ Do we untie them and let them go to be shot or starve to death. NO we don’t, we deal with it.

BUT who is going to prosecute the people who dump them? NO ONE, because you have to prove they dumped them, no chip no proof. The law is useless.

That being said, the dogs can be removed and destroyed. Welcome to Spain.

  • Sick galgo at the gates of Pepis Dog Refuge –

Pepis Solo 400 5 1 2017Another little galgo pup at Pepis Refuge Gates. Jane Brian tells his story.

‘5 Jan 2017. Late last night the dogs in the refuge alerted us to a possible abandonment. We spent an hour searching around with the torch…but could not find anything. This morning when we were cleaning, the dogs started again so watching where they were looking barking we saw this little fella standing looking at us from outside the play area, so he could have been the reason for last night bless him. Unusual for just one so we had another search around but found nothing. He is very skinny and obviously scared. He will be visiting the vets this evening for a medical check-up. His name is Solo.

  • Badly injured on a Spanish road – Galgos112 to the rescue

Galgos 112 Valencia xray 400Galgos112 writes.

29/12 2016 – This end of the year is being particularly hard. The requests we receive daily for help from our team are enormous. And unfortunately we can’t do it all. We don’t have shelter and we rely exclusively on our foster homes, but if there are no houses free we can’t do much more.

Today’s the day we go back to making a great effort and draw strength from where almost no longer do we have anything left…. but impossible not to help this galga, in Valencia, we picked up this princess in a terrible state.

Open fractures of the two front legs, hip fracture, pneumothorax, a deep cut in the bottom and the entire body, scored and covered with wounds… and in so much pain. This small and sweet galguita is no more than two years old. We have called her Luba. Now we wait for her to regain her strength and stabilize to go into surgery.

  • Galgos with Scooby needing special experienced homes

Here are two galgos amongst the dozens with Scooby association, but these two are special as they have neurological problems and therefore need special experienced homes. You can read about them and see videos on this link.

I’d like to be able to show you another galgo just rescued from Scooby – dumped in a perrera in an horrendous state. The video is only on facebook, here is the link if you are able to view it. As ever, it reinforces the fact that the majority of galgueros are sub-human and not fit to breathe the same air as the galgos, nor share the same planet!

  • Galga Pandora – victim of a vicious Spanish galguero

Pandora gate 400 20 12 20162 more dogs dumped at Pepis Dog Refuge, Pedrera, the week of Christmas! Both left tied to the gates whilst Jane and Alan were out! One is a little xbreed pup, and the other is this poor galga who has been named Pandora. Jane reports on her condition.

‘We have just come back from the vets with Pandora, it was confirmed she has been hit with a blunt instrument, also her tail is broken and she will need to have an operation to have part of it removed. She weighed in at 12 kg vastly under weight for a 16 month old galga, she has been chipped and vaccinated today. We will have to clean the head wound 3 times a day, and feed her 4 times a day to build her up. This could be a long haul for you little girl, but rest assured you are going to be just fine and that’s our promise to you.’

Christmas is an expensive time of year, but the vet fees for Pepis continue with dogs like Pandora being dumped. Please donate towards her food and medical care, paypal pepis.dogrefuge@yahoo.co.uk.

  • Torrential rain hits southern Spain –

One tends to think of Spain as always basking in brilliant sunshine – that’s why people go there for winter. Not at the moment this year. It’s a nightmare for the refuges and shelters and any abandoned dogs – please contact any refuges you support to see what help they need.
