  • Galgo Julio – a very slow recovery

    EDL Julio 2 400
    Update on Julio.

‘Julio is fine, even if the beginning of convalescence is laborious. He cannot walk for now. Just to go to bed, that’s all. He must stay in bed.

The rare moments when he does not sleep, he is very gentle and affectionate. This is what makes this cause particularly moving. These galgos are unable to defend themselves against their torturers and even when abused so violently, they remain affectionate with men.

Julio is at Natalia’s in Andalusia. Convalescence will take at least three months. What will happen next to him? He is in a corner of Andalusia where the abuse of galgos is a tradition. Julio is still in danger.’

  • Galgo Julio – survives being thrown from a window

    EDL Julio 400 3 2018
A story of yet another sickening act of cruelty by a sub-human species in Spain…sad that so many of them get Spain a bad name…when there are so many wonderful Spanish people trying to stop the cruelty!

    From L’Europe des Levriers.

‘There is in Spain, the worst and the best of human nature! A galgo was thrown out of the window of a building by gypsies and left for dead. The galgo does not move on the asphalt anymore. A girl picks it up and brings it to the vet. The galgo has multiple injuries but especially a triple fracture of the front leg. The operation will be expensive. Natalia does not have money. She can not pay. The veterinarian refuses to operate.

A call is launched on facebook … without success. It is necessary to operate the galgo which suffers atrociously. Quick, time is running out. Cristina, our vice president in Madrid receives the call. EDL sends the money in stride. The galgo is operated. He is saved!

  • Another injured galga rescued from the streets of Spain!

    Carmen 400 1 25 3 2018
The abandonment of galgos after the end of hunting does not stop…however much the rescue associations and the rest of us protest about the lack of control over the breeding and abandonment of their dogs by the Spanish hunters…the authorities do NOTHING! This galga was found injured and needing help. She has been named Carman.

‘We are appealing for funds to help Carmen, found on the streets and in need of veterinary care. The end of the hunting season has meant we have had to take in Podencos & Galgos in need, some of which have just been dumped on us. Our resources have been depleted, but Carmen tugged at our heart strings and thankfully the response to our appeal enabled us to pick her up.

From our initial assessment of her it looks like she has small bore gun shots wounds in various place, scars all over her body, her rear leg is very swollen and what is now an open wound on her shoulder. And despite it all …. she has the sweetest and most trusting of natures! These dogs always amaze us – can’t believe they still have faith in people!

  • Murdering galguero…young galgo dumped in a bag in a rubbish bin!

    Rescatado-galgo-herencia-contenedor 400 23 3 2018
From the Protectora Herencia, Qualidice, we have been informed that last Friday a citizen of our town while walking her dog heard breathing something inside a container. With the fright in the body I notice two boys to immediately see what was there, one of the boys got inside and rescued a galgo inside a sack.

Of course you have to have little heart to treat a poor animal like that, which was in a bag and in a sorry state.

After checking that there were no more possible animals and just before passing the garbage truck they were able to rescue him. Thanks to the collaboration of these citizens this young galgo has an opportunity. Now he has to eat a lot to recover his strength and improve his status in the Heritage Protector.

We hope that this type of situations will not be repeated and that, of course, those who mistreat the animals will be persecuted.

  • Galgo found dead with chip removed – Scooby offers a reward

The situation for Spain’s hunting dogs does not change…the galgueros refuse to implement control of breeding and stopping abandonment at the end of hunting. Here Scooby writes.

‘We offer a reward of 500€ to who can provide truthful information about the owner of this galgo found dead in Roales Del Pan (Zamora) and with the chip removed *.

And it is that the situation, far from being solved, is worsening year after year. The problem after each hunting season has been reported in recent years, but nothing has improved. In fact, we could say that the hunters are still abandoning and killing the same or more than before.

That is why we ask the citizens to co-operate and denounce those who commit these atrocities, and we are sure that in the local communities everyone knows who owns these animals which are found dead or abandoned.

We also call on the security forces to pay more attention to animal abuse because this type of act must not go unpunished.

  • Scooby to the rescue again – 44 galgos from certain death

News from Scooby. ‘At the end of February Fermin and Christina drove to Jerez de la Frontera, Andalucia, and saved there 44 galgos from a certain death. 30 From them came to the Scooby residencia in Valladolid. They are, very beautiful and elegant males but very scared, humiliated, abused, robbed of all their dignity, but alive. Broken, but not defeated. They will need time, understanding, patience and lots of love and fortunately, we have lots of all that and we will make you whole and proud again…!’

Here is the latest news from the Scooby Blog…makes sad reading that for all the work the shelters do, the over-breeding and mass abandonment of these majestic hounds does not stop.
