Scooby Medina – Spanish galgueros who abandon their hounds have no heart
On Wednesday 14/9/2016), just as Fermín returned home from work (he works as a teacher) a galga suffering from an open wound had been brought in to Medina from Zamora. She was rescued from the motorway after having caused an accident. As yet, we still don’t know what happened to those involved, but we hope no one was hurt. Abandonment not only endangers the life of an innocent dog but also that of innocent people. We wonder if the perpetrator of this despicable action realizes this… Probably not; an action like this shows a complete disregard for life.
Without delay, Fermín put her in his car and headed to our friend’s clinic in Madrid which is 2 hours away. There, she was examined and x-rayed, and endured it all with supernatural patience (it was almost as if she knew they were all there to help her). Besides her leg, where the double fracture was pretty obvious, the x-rays also showed “something” on her chest which has not yet been diagnosed.

Pepis Dog Refuge, Pedrera, Seville …without their work hundreds of dogs would have perished
Please support Jane Brian and Alan in the incredible work they do in the midst of galguero and podenquero hunting olive grove areas…..,.without donations to support them, all the dogs they have saved since 2005 when they opened their doors to the hounds, most of the hundreds of dogs would have died agonising deaths.

Pepis Dog Refuge – without them the abandons would have no where to go….
I am off to Spain today for a week. I organised a Fun Dog Show at our home in France last Sunday 4/9/2016 to raise funds for *epis – we raised a wonderful 826 euros to help pay off some of the 6,000 euro vet bills waiting payment. This video explains why we help Jane and Alan Brian at Pepis. They are halfway between Malaga and Seville…in the middle of the olive producing region of Sevlle. Without Pepis, the dogs in the area…well, we don’t like to think what would happen to them.. Please support Jane and Alan in their work with the dogs at Pepis.

Esperanza Animal Toledo – shelter closing but the work goes on!
Toledo is a terrible place for galgos and podencos. Over the years I’ve reported on hangings of both and in one case Asociacion BaasGalgo took the hunter responsible to court. It costs a lot to operate a rescue shelter and volunteers are always required to look after the dogs, 24/7 7/7 and 365. The Toledo animal shelter Esperanza Animal Toledo shelter is sadly closing but some volunteers will continue the work rescuing hounds and keeping them in residencias and foster homes – which also costs.
Veterinary costs are also high and the team urgently need help to continue their work. Please collaborates with her with 1 € per month (or more if you can): https://www.teaming.net/esperanzaanimaltoledo

Jerez perrera – dumped injured and starving to die
This galgo was dumped in the Jerez perrera in Cadiz. He was suffering from severe malnutrition, had terrible injuries to his body and was missing part of a hind leg. He was rescued and placed in foster care whilst he recovered to gain strength for an operation. He has been named Mimo.
Last Monday Mimo went into surgery. The operation went well. A partial amputation was done, just were his leg was cut by the hunters trap, so his skin can cover the bone and avoid an infection, this leaves the option for a prosthetic limb in the future when his wounds have healed.
If you want to help with the veterinary costs and his aftercare, donate on this page.

Rescuing from a Perrera – advice from Mo Swatek of Pro-Galgo International
The debate about rescuing from a perrera when not living in Spain or the Canary Islands continues to rage. Here are words of advice from Mo Swatek of Pro-Galgo International, who recently drove 250kms to a perrera to rescue podencos and galgos with a short kill date, only to find there was no kill date for the dogs!
RESCUING FROM PERRERAS
**********
As the emotional blackmail and the sharing without checking the real situation is getting worse and worse, here some Suggestions how to reserve dogs from perreras without being cheated, overcharged etc.1. Do not work with private people if money is involved. Pay only to animal welfare associations or directly to the PERRERA.
2. Always insist in the name and exact location of the place.
