  • DeAnimals – fighting the corner for animal cruelty in Spain

Prohibition order Bullas 400 24 6 2016DeAnimals in Murcia continues to work hard with court cases for maltreatment of animals, plus educating the police, lawyers, judges etc on what actions to take where a case of animal neglect/maltreatment is reported.

Regular readers will remember the case of Operation Rehala – or the BULLAS rescue – where over 120 animals, mostly hunting dogs, were found living in dire conditions.  DeAnimals has pursued this case through the courts and in June 2014  here are the details of the result.

    Here’s the English translation.

  • The Spanish hunting dogs who have stolen my heart

Interesting article by a Russian photographer, who visited Spain to photograph the galgos and publicise their plight.  I’ve been in touch with her and she is going to work on a similar project for the Podencos, the ‘poor relations’ of the galgos – they suffer just as much abuse and need just as much help.

The galgos are all wearing collars from Barcelona Dogs, proceeds from sale are donated to SOS Galgos.

  • Greyhound Protection Act created in Florida!

Here’s the story.  Would that we could get the same for greyhounds and galgos everywhere!

  • Create a Spanish national register of animal abusers – sign the petition

Please sign and share.  It’s a petition requesting the creation of a national register of animal abusers in Spain.  Maybe if implemented it would encourage more people to make denuncias and prosecute people.  And especially go for the galgueros~!

  • Galgos don’t fly! Safe now with Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert, Seville

Fundacion BM galga fence 400This is the 4 metre high fence surrounding the refuge of Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert, Seville.  On the morning of 4th August this galga had been  thrown over it!!   The little angel is positive for erlichia and anaplasma, doubtful to lehismania, has severe anaemia and thrombocytopenia.  Some bastard came up with the brilliant idea of throwing her over, who is he!  Nahia, as trhe galga has been called, has a fractured toe, leg wound and is in a lot of pain.  And as it obvious, severely malnourished.

Now Nahia is located in the FBM hospital, her time of suffering has already happened,in  the next few weeks she will only have to worry about recovery and rest.

  • Galga Zuki needs your help – safe with Scooby Medina

I will never understand the mentality of a creature (I won’t call them human being or man) who can let a little galga get in such a pitiful state. Here’s the story of Zuki, safe with Scooby Medina and an update.  Please help Scooby if you can, they do such incredible work with hundreds of animals.  She is managing to walk on her bandaged feet, such a sweet forgiving little galga.

And after reading her sad story, here’s a video to make you smile.

  • Health warning!

ODD 400I recognise myself here!  Certainly the house and garden are littered with dog toys – old shoes, squashed polythene bottles, chewed toys…Polar must live here!

  • Meet the Family 2016

Bebe Polar sleeping 1 400As a change from appeals etc, I thought you might like an update on my Spanish family.  In the photos here you will see my tiny Podenca Andaluz Bebe, now 13 years old, watching Polar sleeping.  Then there’s dark brindle galgo Bracken (a failed foster from Galgos del Sol) who insists on sitting on whoever is on his favourite bed – he’s 7 years old now – in this case lovely Carmela, rescued from a perrera by L’Europe des Levriers.  She also came as a foster but with serious trauma problems.  It took us 2 1/2 years for her to realise that life was good, by which time it was too late to put her up for adoption.  So she’s another failed foster, now 11 years old.

Finally there’s Polar – what can I say?!  3 years old now, adorable, loving, mischievous, very naughty.  And loves empty plastic drinks bottles, as it’s what Jane Brian of Pepis Dog Refuge gives the pups to play with!  He loves sleeping on his back, legs in the air, displaying his huge deep chest for rubbing!  He’s doing very well with his damaged leg, loves to run and play with Bracken and Carmela.

  • Portuguese galga and puppies – rescued just in time

Galga Riti was rescued from the street so heavily pregnant that she gave birth soon after to two gorgeous puppies. Viddy and Viggy will need forever homes when they are old enough, vaccinations, microchips etc.

Lumi is another galgo pup lucky to have been rescued with his galga mom from poor conditions.  You can read the story here and watch the videos of him at play with his sibling.

The only hope of a forever home for these lovelies is outside of Portugal.  Please contact Dogs of Portugal if you can help.
