  • ‘Training’ galgos from motorised vehicles – Andalusian Minister of Justice comments

    In a hearing of the parliamentary commission of the Andalusian government, Emilio de Llera Suárez-Bárcena, minster of Justice and Interior Affairs, told the commission that they would not draft a regulation for the training of galgos with motor vehicles and nor did they ask the Veterinary Department of the University of Cordoba to study this matter. He responded to a question asked by the IU-GREENSdeputy, Alba María Doblas Miranda.

    On a personal note, the minister added that he is absolutely against the training of galgos with motor vehicles. “I do not know if it is damaging to the galgos, I am not a vet. But I find the image of this training repugnant and it hurts my feelings”. Read the story here.

At the same time, they are working hard to save some dogs in a hellish situation and desperately need somewhere for the dogs to go, so that they can denounce the owner for cruelty, neglect and anything else they can throw at him. I know these dogs aren’t galgos, but I ask and ask for people to make a denuncia in cruelty cases. So please, share this appeal and contact any friends you have who could foster any of these dogs, or donate to them going into kennels.

  • Cadiz – mass protest against euthanasia in Gesser and Jerez killing stations!

    Demo against killing 250 Jerez Gesser perreras 3 2013There was a huge demonstration and candlelit vigil in Cadiz last week protesting about the policy of killing dogs and against euthanasia of dogs in perreras Gesser and Zoosanitaria in Jerez de la Frontera. Those of you on Facebook will have seen links to all the pix via Save the Galgo. PACMA was one of the associations involved. Here are just a few.

  • Evil metal snares which maim rather than kill

    Galgo caught in trap 190 3 2013This happened this week in the pine forest of Camaleon. The dog is called Gala and its foreleg was caught in the trap. The person rescuing her had their hand badly damaged from the animal biting them in fear and pain. On Saturday, the organisation which found it is organising a search for more of these wicked traps. They say ‘some son of a bitch is putting these traps where kids play and walk the dogs.’

    Podencos are often caught in these traps, searching in undergrowth for rabbits.

  • The Plight of the Spanish Galgo – in the spotlight in the UK Daily Mail

    I recently reported about professional British photographer Martin Usborne visiting Malaga to learn about the plight of the galgos. He is there again this week, visiting shelters in the Seville area, to photograph galgos for an exhibition later in the year. See Ebro walking here!

  • Galga mama and babies in Hellin perrera, Albacete – anyone room?

    Hellin perrera, Albacete Ari and pups 190 7 3 2013Many times my heart breaks with the appeals and stories I receive each day…this is another of those times. With tears in my eyes for what this poor galga has suffered in the condition she was in.

    A galga in Hellin killing station, Albacete, with 4 new born puppies. They were in the hands of some gitanos (Spanish gypsies) who threw stones at her. If they don’t get out of the perrera before they are killed, they will die in there from cold or disease. Please someone help Ari and her babies.

  • Ochavillo del Rio, Cordoba – needs help of every kind

    The partners of Ochavillo del Río (Córdoba) are responsible for over 20 dogs, they only have a sack of feed. Its facilities are appalling. They also have puppies.
