  • Update on Toledo hunter who hung his galgos – Baas Galgo contines the fight

    Here is the English translation of the statement of the hunter in Toledo accused of hanging and disposing of 3 galgos. Baas Galgo took out a denuncia and are pursuing the man through the court system. Fingers crossed that they win.

    ‘Madrid 25th of April; in the Torrijos Court (Toledo), this is the statement of the person who has been accused of hanging his galgos. He acknowledged in his Guard Civil´s statement that the two galgos with microchips belonged to him. Likewise, he acknowledged that he hung the galgos in his house and after he buried them in the place where they were found.

  • Galgos del Sol – catching the abandoned galgos in Murcia

    Galgos del Sol is a small association formed in October 2010 by Tina Solera, who had spent the previous few years saving galgos and podencos which ended up in Los Infiernos dog shelter. In the past 7 months GdS have rescued and rehomed 53 galgos and podencos. But as with all associations, they exist on donations and fundraising. Here are four of the latest galgos to be rescued – from the side of a motorway, in the middle of a lorry transport area, terrified loose on the campo. Vet fees are mounting, please donate if you can help them.

  • Life is cheap on the streets of Cuenca – galga Emy needs help

    Emy Cuenca head 04 2011 190 What a beautiful face. Another gorgeous galga abandoned and injured on the streets of Cuenca. Here is her story.

    ‘Emy was brought to us this morning from Cuenca. Emilio picked her up last night, completely terrified with a large wound in her leg. She had been wandering for several days tghrough the town but no one had stopped to help, not uncommon in this country of savages.

  • Spanish Galgos injured, abandoned, mistreated, the Galgueros perpetrate the horror

    PERLA1[1] 24 03 2011 250 I don’t know how the volunteers and associations in Spain keep their stamina and emotions, I am getting more emails in this year than ever since Galgo News started in 2007 and I am sickened by the sheer volume of galgos in perreras, abandoned in the street, hung from trees, kicked and stoned, abandoned to be injured on motorways……..it is simply unbelievable that the authorities in Spain remain blinkered about how this affects the international perception of Spain.

  • Hanged galgos in Toledo – Baas Galgo takes the murderer to Court

    Hanged galgo 4 16 03 2011 250 Sickening story of animal abuse but, at the same time, heartening if the perpetrator is brought to justice and severe penalties inflicted on him. Story received today from Baas Galgo.

    A man confessed to having hanged his greyhounds because “it was the custom to do so at the end of the hunting season”. The animals had a microchip, which helped to locate the culprit. This case is being investigated by the court of Torrijos and the hunter faces a prison sentence.

  • Risa, saved from Jerez killing station, now looking for her forever home

    Cleo Risa crop 2 2011 011 210 This beautiful galga is Risa, about 14 months old, taken to the Jerez killing station by her galguero in December 2010, to be euthanaised along with dozens of other dogs. She was rescued on Christmas Eve with 3 other galgos, one just 5 months old, by 112carlotagalgos. She is now in foster at my home in Western France, looking for her forever home.

    She has her EU passport, is microchipped, vaccinated, sterilized, negative for Mediterranean diseases, and the results are awaited for her rabies antibodies blood test for possible adoption in Britain – although she is clear for adoption elsewhere in Europe now.

  • Galgo rescuers brave snowstorms to save the innocents

    Link to the story of L’Europe des Levriers’ rescue at the end of January, in a snowstorm. They brought out many galgos and a couple of podencos from the refuge at Herencia, run by Rosario, including two puppies found hiding under a makeshift shelter, whom Rosario named Draco and Kyra. Draco has been adopted by an artist. As always, some of the dogs have to be left behind, waiting for the next rescue. Enjoy the pix.

  • Kafir – a galgo surviving against all odds – looking for his forever home

    Kafir lying down 0110 250 This is the latest news about Kafir, the poor galgo who tried to chew off his leg.
    Cristina writes:

    ‘I just want to tell you that Kafir was operated last Friday 8th January and the operation was a total success. The rest of his hind leg has been amputed and it was a wonderful job of our spanish vet, who sadly is already used to these kind of operations.

    Poor Kafir had a bad waking up from anesthesy as he was crying very much and felt totally confused. He stayed in the clinic during the night and I went there to bring him his favourite rice with chicken and carrots for his dinner.
