  • Chained galga starving to death – now fighting to live

Charl Adina carrying 250 12 2013This is galga Adina – chained up, no food, no water, left to starve to death. Rescued and taken immediately to the vet and kept in the clinic for a few days to monitor. Now she is safe with 112carlotagalgos. Charl tells the story – briefly

‘I now introduce you to Princess Adina!

Survival is her wish. Her longing to live through the darker days held her… brought her to this.. home.

At the moment we’re not testing her .. everything seems to be working ok for the moment. Bowels and urine. But she will be watched. Tests of the usual would only be false at this time. So recuperation is what she needs. Rest. Food. Rest. Food.

She longed to live.. here she is. Welcome to finca 112 Carlotagalgos special girl.

Embraced by chains.. you have been released. We have prayed for you. For strength to see a new day.. It’s yours to take now.. day by day. Little by little.. you will see your forever.’

Vet fees are already mounting, plus special food costs – please donate by paypal to comdelrio@hotmail.com.

  • The Plight of the Spanish Galgo – in the spotlight in the UK Daily Mail

I recently reported about professional British photographer Martin Usborne visiting Malaga to learn about the plight of the galgos. He is there again this week, visiting shelters in the Seville area, to photograph galgos for an exhibition later in the year. See Ebro walking here!

  • Galgos on death row in perreras Hellin, Badajoz and Mairena

Anke Simonchel 250 7 2012Why am I here, on death row? What did I do wrong? I bear the scars from serving you well, Senor Galguero, even though you starved and beat me. What did I do wrong?

You did nothing wrong, you were simply born a galgo in Spain – from the moment of your conception, you were doomed to a life of hell unless someone with a heart could rescue you!
More galgos on death row in Hellin, Badajoz and Mairena perreras.

  • Protectora ArcoAris, Cuenca – 150 dogs may be killed – please help!

Protectora ArcoAiris de Cuenca 250Nightmare scenario in Cuenca! I feel sick in my heart to read this, thinking of all the animals who have been saved, who may now be killed. Here’s the story.

The provincial perrera in Cuenca where they used to sacrifice every 3 months many, many dogs, has since January 2011 been a protectora where, since that time, not one dog was sacrificed. The president, Pilar, makes tremendous efforts to keep it this way but because they are just 1 year working as a shelter, they just don’t have enough associations who help them in finding adoption families for their dogs. This means they now have some 300 dogs instead of the 150 which is permitted. Of the 300 dogs there are at least 100 galgos.

  • Accommodation in Spain – not for the faint hearted!

A couple of videos for you to watch; one is a galguero telling the truth about the attitude to their galgos, and the second illustrates the conditions in which galgos are often kept. Note also a horse is kept there too! And a third video – life for the galgos, life for the volunteers – it takes its toll on them all.

There is also a campaign being run now to stop British and Irish racing greyhounds being sent to India; here you can see them being used to hunt in Pakistan!

  • Motoring in Spain – or how to train galgos to run….faster…

Training galgos AndaluciaOne of the ways of training a galgo is to run it alongside a motor vehicle or motorbike. This was made illegal because of the injuries suffered by galgos who went down. I have seen the injuries, horrific, on one galga we brought out of Spain. In 2011 the Junta of Andalucia legalised it. Here is a video showing what happens, a group who were trying to stop it, other galgueros who came in to support their friend, and finally Seprona arrived. Correct link here if you have problems with the other one
