This is the hunters’ answer to the publicity about them hanging their dogs. These men are sick, there is no reasoning with them, they are a blight on Spain and the majority of Spanish people. This message just received from Scooby.

Today is February 1st. The end of the hunting season is upon us and for this reason our phones and emails have not stopped with people asking us for help to take dogs. Today we got two phone calls from Seville. The shelters there are full, and many of them have waiting lists to take dogs. But what is even worse that we heard today, is the galgueros are threatening to remove the microchip from the dogs and let them roam free in the streets, left to die.
Yet again, another list of poor galgos and a podenco on death row in the Jerez killing station. Did you know there are two killing stations in Jerez – Jerez and Gesser, the latter is a private one and it is claimed that they look after the dogs in their care better, food and water provided.
I have lost count of the number of galgo pictures sent to me this winter, of galgos in Jerez and Gesser and Mairena – all disposed of by the hunters………they couldn’t care less. Contact Maribel if anyone can help these pour souls.
When will the Spanish government, regional and municipal councils, hunting and racing federations going to realise the power of the Internet, how much adverse publicity this gives to Spain? So many people vote with their feet and their purses now – won’t go on holiday in Spain and the Spanish islands, won’t buy food produced in Spain.
Millions of Spaniards are unaware of this – why should the minority of hunters and bull fighters and other Spanish animal abusers erode the International image of this country. Always the same, the minority ruin life for the majority.
Pray that there will be some corner, some shelter for these poor abused souls. But all of them are overflowing, submerged beneath the sheer mass of abandoned and injured dogs. Support them, in any of the appeals I run. Even 10 euros will help towards buying food, vaccinations etc.

This is Betty, a female podenquita small, tan and medium length hair, abandoned in Cordoba. She is very suspicious, does not let you come, does not trust. These photos were taken by a friend was with me. This little bitch is on the street, she seems to be stuck, because there is absolutely no trust in humans. There is a girl who puts food and water down when she goes to this town but she does not live there.
The Mairena perrera rears its ugly head again. Podencos and galgos amongst the poor souls dumped there to be killed, even a puppy, also a black and white spaniel; living in horrendous conditions. It’s cold, wet, dirty – they are starving – why feed a dog when it’s going to be killed! Cry for these poor souls. If any one can help save them from a miserable death.

‘Galgos are key to the success of a hunt, but many of them are killed or abandoned by their owners when hunting season ends. Rescue Associations claim that animals have become a disposable tool. A few days ago a woman called me crying, 4 dogs skeletal and more dead than alive. I went to see and do photos, and what I found on arrival was eerie. They are two males and two females. Of the males, one is very sweet and young, have white teeth, and let me pet him about looking for love. not too thin, and hits all the food (normal if starved), but it’s a terrific galgo and loves petting.

Sandra and Leticia do marvellous work at this shelter, I can’t praise them enough for what they do. But the thing I can’t get my head round is that it is owned by a hunter who also breeds galgos and sells them to the galgueros; a rich man! I visited it in June 2009.
