  • 4 month old galgo puppy – help Baas Galgo with her recovery

Marisol 2 Sandra Bas 12 2010 250 This is Marisol, the latest victim of cruelty and abandon taken in by the BaasGalgo Association. Weep with me for the suffering of this little creature and for the courage of Leticia who has her in her care.

‘Marisol is only four months old and already she is suffering from severe rickets, scabies, mange, malnutrition, bone problems, and to top it all she has a bad fever and her condition is critical. Marisol was found on the morning of the 9th of December in front of the entrance to the LIDL supermarket in Torrijos (Toledo).

  • Update on Jerez Galgos – yet more dumped every day! Curse the hunters!

All 15 of the first Jerez galgos were saved, to be immediately replaced by another 15. Everyone is overflowing with dogs, so only about half a dozen of these have been saved, and today Maribel reports another 14 have been dumped at the perrera for killing. It is just simply sickening. And the sad thing is that the more everyone who loves these dogs works to save them, the galgueros are laughing up their sleeves at the seemingly bottomless pit of foster homes and refuges willing to take them……….dump the dogs, let someone else sort the problem out!

There are young dogs, old dogs, bitches used for breeding, pregnant bitches, injured dogs – the hunters don’t give a damn. And they don’t seem to realise, or even care, that this all gives a negative impression of Andalucia.

Tonight our hearts bleed for those unable to be saved.

Let’s all hope she continues to make a great recovery.

  • Jerez perrera Galgos – SOS Galgos saves some – more dumped by hunters!

SOS Galgos have taken some of the galgos from the Jerez perrera in Cadiz, including the heavily pregnant bitch. Here’s what Anna Clements says.

‘Some photos of the galgos we got out of the Jerez shelter today (Monday). The two brindle ones together should be arriving on Wednesday and will be at the event. We plan to get some more out during the course of the week. More were taken into the perrera today, brought in by hunters.’

  • Happy 3rd birthday Galgo News!

Yes, 3 years since Craig and I launched Galgo News. Time to reflect on the past year, both highs and lows.

High has definitely got to be the completion of my book and its launch – to date we’ve done 2 print runs, selling over 100 copies of the printed book and 10 ebooks. And I haven’t even started the next phase of promotion! I’ve just changed my publisher and am waiting to take collection of the next print run. The book has also now been translated into Spanish – publishing will start in January 2011. And a French translation is currently under way.

  • Spanish Galgos Ulises, Maisey, Luna from El Paraiso – please donate to vet fees

Naisey after operation 24 11 2010 250 More abandoned and rescued galgos……from the perrera, from the countryside, urbanizations……….they are being abandoned everywhere, and it is only November – still the middle of the Spanish hunting season! One of the galgas rescued from El Paraiso could be pregnant, so an urgent spaying operation has now been carried out. And Maisey, an abandoned injured galga – sadly her leg could not be saved, so she is yet another one with an amputation. And the vet fees need paying!

Ulises was a galgo who had been living rough for months, no one could get near him. Eventually he was so ill he could be caught. He has leishmania, ehrlichia, rickets, a skin condition, but he is a fighter, as are the other two…..he wants to live and experience a forever home.

  • Spanish Galga Lola – an expressive poem to share with you

Rehoming Lola and Owen Jeminah Kunfeld 11 2010 200 I’d like to share this poem with you. Written by Lola, with a little help from her lifetime friend Owen Davis who adopted her, his wife works with Greyhounds in Nood Belgium. (Photo by Jemimah Kunfeld)

    LOLA’S POEM

Spain is the land of the heartless.
I don’t care about the mosque at Cordoba.
I don’t care any more about Pablo Casals.
Or what his cunning fingers did with the bow.
The white Alhambra, abounding in cool shade,
    Singing fountains and sunlight,
Is a story of long ago.
    Forget it.

  • Canicross in Murcia – Tina and galgo Guapo over the finishing line!

Start line! 250 Tina’s done it – she’s run her first Canicross today. Here’s what she says.

‘We have done the canicross. We had a great day although was almost a non starter for us when the race organisers thought it was a good idea to let off a few cannons……. yep, clever stuff as the dogs went crazy and Guapo pulled me over on a bank he was so scared and then spent 1/2hr shivering. Well we got to the start line and once we were off, he really enjoyed it. We came 12th overall but not sure out of how many, I will wait for results! Thanks for all the sponsors!
