  • End of hunting season in Spain – galgueros dump their dogs en masse!!

Galgo Rescue June 2009 050 210 I can’t keep up with it all on Galgo News, just too much to post; galgos and podencos abandoned throughout winter, refuges full to bursting, embalming galgos rears its ugly head again – more in another post – and now galgueros dumping their dogs at the refuges and shelters. Yet more galgos dumped in the perreras, and now cutting microchips out of the dogs before dumping. How do the volunteers cope?

Now I’ll tell you about a man who could make a change but hasn’t.

  • Galgos dumped everywhere in Murcia! Please help pay vet fees

Angela 190 sweet%20little%20pod Tina 01 2011 Abandoned galgos and podencos everywhere, as well as dumped in killing stations. Can you imagine dumping this little cutie in a killing station?! There is a team trying to catch the podencos in Valencia, (mentioned in a previous post), one of the dogs has disappeared; and there are dozens wandering the streets of Murcia.

Galgos del Sol have been collecting some, and are trying to catch others – too frightened to be caught, so needing to be tempted into a trap. When are the hunters going to realise that the majority of Spaniards despise them for the bad press they give the country around the world. And when are the laws going to be applied.

These dogs all rescued this week need their EU passports preparing

  • Seville, galgos in terrible conditions – please help

Seville 2 01 2011 gypsies Please can any associations help this brave lady? Here’s the appeal I received.

CAN YOU HELP SAVE THESE GALGOS, PLEASE?

These galgos are in a shanty town in Sevilla. For two years Inmaculada has been rehoming them little by little. She doesn’t have photos of them all as the people become very angry and won’t allow her in the place. There were eight females, seven males and six mixed breed.

  • Publicity for Podencos – help and forever homes wanted

For many years Rick and Lesley Beauchamp in the UK have been helping rehomed podencos rescued by SARA Lanzarote; virtually the only chance of a loving forever home is on mainland Europe. Thanks to Ed of Podencoworld for forwarding this clip of a BBC interview with Lesley. Please contact Ed or SARA Lanzarote if you are interested in helping these fabulous hounds.

  • Galgos saved from death – please donate to vet fees

Bombero and Cremo 1 17 01 2011 250 The perreras in Spain are full to bursting with abandoned dogs, especially galgos now that the hunting season is drawing to a close. Despite all the ones rescued from Jerez perrera, Cadiz, there are still more than a couple of dozen there, awaiting a painful death. At El Paraiso perrera, they are feeding the galgos, hoping someone will rescue them. Several have been taken to foster homes already, and two more were taken out last weekend. White ones, which were once regarded as THE most important galgo to the Spanish aristocracy.

  • Spanish galgo Nicolas, wounded and dying on the street – Baas Galgo to the rescue

Nicolas 1 Baas Galgo 01 2011 250 How did you spend Xmas and the New Year? Thousands of galgos spent theirs either dumped in a killing station waiting to die, or abandoned, searching for food and shelter. The Spanish volunteers didn’t have time off. This is the story of Nicolas, rescued from pain and death by Rachel and Silvia on Christmas Eve, supported by Baas Galgo. To see the video of him at the vet surgery, scroll down to the bottom of the story and click on the YouTube link. Please donate to his veterinary care. He has a foster home in Madrid where he will receive the best possible care to help his recovery.

  • Galgo pup Charlie, survivor of Jerez perrera – sadly Charlie has now died

Charlie 2 Charl 01 2011 250 The refuges and shelters are, as ever, swamped under the sheer volume of abandoned dogs, especially galgos – there’s been no let up all winter. And still the governments and authorities ignore the problem. Here’s another casualty of the galgueros. This is Charlie, 5 months old galgo pup, suffering from a viral infection in the Jerez killing station.

Update 8 01 2011 Sadly today Charlie gave up his fight for life. Thanks to everyone who donated to help the vet try and save him.

  • Podencos need help too – can you help?

Blind podenco 200 Jerez perrera Maribel Silvia 12 2010This is another sad casualty of hunting in Spain; this blind podenco was dumped in the Jerez perrera in December. It’s bad enough for all the dogs who can see, imagine not being able to see in that environment too. Luckily Silvia of Galgo Connection Spain in Valencia has taken him to give him a chance of a comfortable future life.

Update 05 01 2011 – Alphonso sadly crossed over the rainbow bridge today. At least in his last few days he knew the sound of kind voices and felt the gentle caress of caring hands.

And there is news in today about an injured podenco which has been taken to the vet by Galgos del Sol.

  • Spanish galgo Romero, a survivor looking for his forever home

Romero 1 Tina Introducing Romero. He was born in the wild in Murcia, no one knows what happened to his mother and siblings. Only 4 months old, he appeared one day with a badly injured hind leg, near a house. Food and water were put down for him, which he consumed after dark, when no humans were about. In terror and considerable pain, he survived in this way. One day he collapsed and was taken by Gaynor to her vet, who had to amputate his badly injured and infected hind leg.
