  • Letters to write – please join my campaign – write now!

Letters 200It’s time to run another letter-writing campaign to the Spanish national and provincial governments. Thank you to Dioni del Rio for this translation. Please copy and paste the letter into a word document and post. This link takes you to the list of addresses for the recipients – the national government – Prime Minister, Ministers of Tourism, Environment, Sport, Interior, all in Madrid, Andalucia, Murcia, Extremadura, Castilla la Mancha, Castilla y Leon, Balearics, Canary Islands, Valencia, Basque. The relevant addresses are highlighted in bold. You’ll need 15 copies of the letter if you write to them all. I’m beginning to get replies to my letters, so someone is reading them! Please join in, the galgos and podencos desperately need your help.

  • Protectora ArcoAris, Cuenca – 150 dogs may be killed – please help!

Protectora ArcoAiris de Cuenca 250Nightmare scenario in Cuenca! I feel sick in my heart to read this, thinking of all the animals who have been saved, who may now be killed. Here’s the story.

The provincial perrera in Cuenca where they used to sacrifice every 3 months many, many dogs, has since January 2011 been a protectora where, since that time, not one dog was sacrificed. The president, Pilar, makes tremendous efforts to keep it this way but because they are just 1 year working as a shelter, they just don’t have enough associations who help them in finding adoption families for their dogs. This means they now have some 300 dogs instead of the 150 which is permitted. Of the 300 dogs there are at least 100 galgos.

  • Closing down a bad perrera – creates more problems than it solves

Mairena perrera death row 4 1109 250Closing down a perrera does not solve any problems, it simply creates more problems. Many perreras keep the dogs and cats on death row in reasonably clean conditions, with food and water. They are also happy to allow adoptions of the animals, to give them a second chance of life. Other perreras keep the animals in atrocious conditions, as we know from publicity on the Internet.

At the end of the day, improving the conditions for animals in the bad perreras should be the priority, not closing them down. I posted a link to an appeal organised by a third party to close down Mairena perrera but stated that I did not agree with it. Comments further down the post also confirmed that other people agreed there are preferable solutions.

  • Accommodation in Spain – not for the faint hearted!

A couple of videos for you to watch; one is a galguero telling the truth about the attitude to their galgos, and the second illustrates the conditions in which galgos are often kept. Note also a horse is kept there too! And a third video – life for the galgos, life for the volunteers – it takes its toll on them all.

There is also a campaign being run now to stop British and Irish racing greyhounds being sent to India; here you can see them being used to hunt in Pakistan!

  • Dog Fighting – an innocent victim used as bait – Spanish galgos suffer

Galga as dog bait 250 14 1 2012Because galgos are not aggressive dogs, unscrupulous people use them as bait for dog fighting. This galguita found a few days ago, is young, full of wounds and has a broken tail.

There currently seems to be some uncertainty as to who actually has the galga,
