Closing down a bad perrera – creates more problems than it solves

Mairena perrera death row 4 1109 250Closing down a perrera does not solve any problems, it simply creates more problems. Many perreras keep the dogs and cats on death row in reasonably clean conditions, with food and water. They are also happy to allow adoptions of the animals, to give them a second chance of life. Other perreras keep the animals in atrocious conditions, as we know from publicity on the Internet.

At the end of the day, improving the conditions for animals in the bad perreras should be the priority, not closing them down. I posted a link to an appeal organised by a third party to close down Mairena perrera but stated that I did not agree with it. Comments further down the post also confirmed that other people agreed there are preferable solutions.

I have now received the following information and have asked to be kept appraised of every development.

‘I’ve read this article about the perrera de mairena closing down and I think there has been a misunderstanding. I form part of this project and can tell you that what we really want is to dismiss the current committee and put people in charge that really are concerned for animal welfare.

If this is not poss, jble we have prepared a proyect to present to all the councils that have a contract with this perrera to take over the pick-up of abandoned animals in this region. If this happens the first thing we will do is take all the dogs out of this horrible place.

It is a lot of work and we need help from all the societies in Spain- we have to be united to make this project work. The last thing we want is to close Mairena down with all the animals in there, because we have seen what they do now and I hate to think of what they are able to do!!’

I found something on Facebook, unfortunately in Spanish… I suppose it is their website (?)

There is something written about the Mairena perrera, I wish someone would translate it, that would be great.
If they want to write to the authorities and decide on an international action, I am sure many people would sign an online petition, when they get informed on the issue.
