Alan and Jane thought they were going to retire when they moved to Spain. Instead, like so many other animal loving Brits, they could not turn away from the desperate situation for abandoned dogs and cats. They now have about 70 dogs at Pepis, and the latest arrivals are these 4 puppies, three of them very newly born and another little girl left at their gate yesterday. This means tremendous amount of work around the clock with feeds – those of us with children remember it well!

Many people like to do more than just sit on a beach, and Vivienne Wharton has some suggestions. She lives in the Ricote area of Murcia in eastern Spain and has become very involved in the plight of abandoned dogs. She has linked together many rescue associations and volunteers and even got involved in protesting at a bull fight last month!

Many shelters and refuges offer accommodation to people willing to help with caring for their animals and Vivienne is co-ordinating help in her area. You can read about the holidays here.
