  • Neal’s Yard – help Galga Petra

Neal's Yard Julie 250My friend Julie has organised a Neal’s Yard fundraiser for Pepis Refuge. Take a look at her website here, lots of lovely natural products, to treat/pamper yourself and as gifts for friends for Xmas. I use the foot balm for tired feet(!), joint capsules, lip gloss – all suitable for sensitive skins too. You can order any time.

One of the dogs you will be helping is Petra, who was recently dumped tied to the main gates with a tight cord round her neck. Jane Brian says it is a long time since they have a dog so terrified of life as Petra. Below you can see the neck cord (against Alan’s hand). If you look carefully behind the blue bed, you’ll see her hiding there. It makes it difficult to clean the kennel as, besides humans, she is terrified of the brush, shovel, water to clean the concrete.

  • Galgo puppy Polar’s diary – update June 2014

Polar bed twisty 250I’ve been asked how Polar is progressing. Where do I start?! He’s been with me a year now and he continues to collect asbos (anti social behaviour orders) – a ball of white knitting wool was unravelled around the courtyard today! He’s digging up my plants, scattering soil all over the terrasse; a paperback book stolen and chewed, the hose for the outlet on my tumble dryer squashed…and he’s STILL only 16 months old! The caption for this photo is ‘I’m knackered with all this being naughty!’

He is thoroughly enjoying dog obedience classes where he is a popular personality. He is good with his response to commands – sit, down, stay, heel – his recall is also excellent – except the exercise where he is supposed to sit and stay whilst I walk a distance away. I only need to take two or three strides and he’s already straining at the lead to follow me!

  • Galgo Polar – update on treatment – canine physiotherapy

Polar Carmela bed 1 250 30 10 2013Last week we visited a Dog and Cat Physiotherapist/Osteopath/Re-education with our disabled galgo pup Polar. She was recommended to me by 3 different people at the dog club which I have joined to take Polar for obedience training, as being someone who could help with his mobility problem due to his handicap.

Fazia is a fascinating lady. She is one of very few canine physios in the whole of France – just remember that France is 3 x the size of the UK! France desperately needs more people like Fazia! She covers an area you couldn’t imagine in the UK!

  • Tina’s Appeal – help save this young injured galga

Pepis galga Tina 2 250This poor galga arrived at Pepis Refuge today. Jane explains.

‘This young girl, who we have now named Tina, was bought to the refuge this afternoon, found limping in the street. A visit to the vets and xrays taken, which shows she has a very severe brake, vet’s opinion is she has been hit with a blunt instrument.

An operation is needed urgently. The bone specialist can do the operation on Monday, 4/11/2013. We are caring for her and she is on strong medication for the pain. The specialist will need to be paid on Monday, we urgently need your help to raise the money, to ease her pain, the cost of the operation will be around, 600 euros.

  • Polar’s diary – the story of a little white galgo puppy

Polar 250 29 5 2013Polar is a small white galgo puppy, born in February 2013, who was abandoned outside Pepis Refuge, Pedrera, Seville, in early April. He has a deformed back leg which, xray results show, is due to being broken when very young and then left to heal itself. Unless he has ongoing operations on his leg, it will not grow as he grows, which might lead to amputation. I decided to adopt him, as my French vet is marvellous at putting injured/deformed legs back together. The operations will be expensive and I am hoping people will help me with the cost of these, by coming up with some fundraising ideas.

Polar has had his bath today, apparently water went everywhere! On Thursday he leaves Pepis and his friends and begins his journey to France, arriving Friday afternoon.

  • Galgo pup Polar needs leg operations – Pepis Refuge, Seville, needs your help for him

Pepis Polar Dillon 250 1 5 2013Just look at these two little friends, comforting each other at Pepis refuge, Seville. Jane tells their stories.

‘This is Polar, he is 4 months old. He was left at the refuge three weeks ago and has a deformed back leg. He saw the bone specialist and we were told that his leg was broken when he was a tiny baby and as he has grown the leg has become twisted above and below his knee. He will need to have several operations to correct the deformity. We were told that if the leg is not tended too soon, as he grows the leg will not. Who will want to home him as he is….

  • Galgo Zafiro – waiting at Pepis Refuge, Seville, for a forever home

Pepis Refuge Zafiro 250 5 2013Jane Brian of Pepis Refuge, near Seville, tells the story of this beautiful galgo.

‘A galgero came to the refuge about a month ago asking, can we take a Galgo. At the time we told him we were full, he explained he wanted his Galgo to come here to Pepis. We asked him if he could wait a month, then it may be possible. He agreed then left.

Almost to the day he turned up at 9pm last night, with Zafiro. A beautiful five year old boy. He took Zafiro out of the car without a leash on him, and Zafiro stood next to his side, looking up at him, tail wagging and looking at him with such loyalty. I must admit, the galgero himself looked sad to leave him, but leave him, he did. He told me has had him from a puppy and asked would he get a good home.
