Spring will soon be with us and thoughts turn to getting away from the miserable wet winter. Why not go to Spain and help in an animal shelter. Accommodation is provided and your help will be greatly appreciated. Here’s some suggestions.

I have recently been thinking about volunteering at a shelter in Spain. I am currently living in the UK with my adopted galgo but I’d like to spend some time helping out at a shelter.
I have lived in Spain and driven too and from Spain numerous times by car and camper van. I speak Spanish and some Catalan.
I would like to volunteer in one of the northern shelters where they are overrun with galgos in a predominately Spanish speaking area.
If there is anyone who would like to join me on such a trip or whom I could help organise a trip of their own please get in touch.
Tullie – can I share your suggestion above on my fb page? Are you thinking of someone like Animales Rioja, since you speak Catalan. They are overrun with Podencos too who are abandoned in much larger numbers than the galgos. Will you be keeping a blog of your trip so that I can link into it for my readers?
Hi, I read your reply too quickly and posted this message myself on your FB page.
I was actually thinking of a refuge I saw in Ciudad Rodrigo which is in the province of Salamanca. I saw a photo posted of a FB page showing they were overrun with dogs especially galgos but I cannot seem to find a link to what they are called.
Or perhaps Scooby in Medina del Campo. I would also like to visit Pepis refuge near Seville and will probably make arrangements to do that when I am over in Malaga for a short trip a the end of March.
A blog would be a good way of letting people share the day to day existence of some of the characters in the refuge.
I don’t want to leave my dog behind so I am formulating a plan to get another motor home and drive to Spain and live in it with him at or near a shelter for a reasonable period of time. This will be the 6th time he’ll have travelled to Spain with me.
Ooops found the refuge I was looking for. Ciudad Animal in Pedro Munoz, Ciudad Real. Its about 270 miles north of Malaga and 100 miles south of Madrid.
Cuidad Real was the first stop on my first rescue. La Bienvenida was where I picked up my first galga, Karmel, plus 3 others which we brought back to France. Pedro Muniz – now Cuidad Animal – was built a year or two later, if my memory serves me correctly, I remember appealing for donations for building materials. Ciudad Real is a hellhole for hunting dogs.
Your trips sounds exciting, hope you find a companion besides your dog.
