  • Pepis Refuge – miracles do happen – with a little help

Mobile 250A message from Jane and Alan Brian of Pepis Refuge, Pedrera, Spain – to all of you who have supported them, especially over the last 2 years since they were hit by 2 mudslides through the kennels and their house; their house was condemned for living in; their electricity generator packed up and the new one didn’t last long either; they both ended up in hospital, at different times; the Belgian galgo association who had supported them then pulled the plug because they were feeding all the 60+ dogs, not just the galgos; a ‘supporter’ – I use the term loosely – was trying to close them down. They were at absolute rock bottom.

With your help and support and that of many other people I contacted – we picked them up. All of you who have responded to appeals for help for them – you rock! Having said that, there are still 7+ dogs there – another little xbreed dumped on Sunday – named Sunday! But don’t forget, they need 700 euros/month just to feed all the dogs….plus homes for them too.

  • Planning a holiday? Why not volunteer at a shelter in Spain

Spring will soon be with us and thoughts turn to getting away from the miserable wet winter. Why not go to Spain and help in an animal shelter. Accommodation is provided and your help will be greatly appreciated. Here’s some suggestions.

  • Urgent help needed – serious storm damage to kennels at Portugal Dog Rescue!

Portugal Dog Rescue 250 3 10 2013Remember Estrela and more recently Duke? Saved by Portugal Dog Rescue. On 22nd October the very worst happened at the shelter – the ‘temporary’ roof came down at the shelter, sadly one dog had to be pts. You can read the full story below. The new kennels which were built after an appeal earlier in the year are fine, more now need to be built in place of the ‘temporary’ one so that this never happens again.

Teresa does most of the rescuing and rehoming herself, looking after the dogs, plus having a job. An incredible lady who does not need the heartache of this happening. It costs 50 euros to build a new permanent kennel. Please help if you can, any amount helps buy some more bricks, tiles for the roof…here’s where you can donate.

  • The Spanish nightmare continues – 180,000 dogs killed in the past year…

El Arca de Noe Albacete 250 7 2013There’s been no let up in the number of galgos abandoned and dumped in the perreras. So many that I simply can’t post them all – 19 in one just one perrera recently, multiply that by the hundreds of perreras in Spain…and that’s just galgos. The figure quoted for dogs killed in perreras in the last year is 180,000! That’s 493 dogs every day, 206 dogs every hour, or 1 dog per minute.

The pressure on the refuges, the volunteers, the fosterers is tremendous – and the national and provincial governments STILL do nothing to implement a mass sterilization programme and educate people not to let their dogs mate.

One example of the pressure on the refuges is an appeal this week from Cristina of Arca de Noe of Albacete.

  • Mairena Killing Station – Petition to close it down

Mairena 1 250In previous years I’ve featured galgos and podencos dumped in the Mairena killing station (obviously there are thousands of other types of dogs dumped there too which suffer the same horrendous end to their lives). Because of the bad publicity, volunteers were banned from going in to photo the dogs.

There is now an on-line petition to close the place down. This is the link. The petition is in Spanish and a translation is below. You have to register with the petition website, here are the instructions by on-line translator:

  • Floods in Cordoba pt 2 – please help the L’Europe des Levriers galgos there

Villa del Rio 6 190 21 05 2011 Some of the galgos in the Villa del Rio are under the care and control of L’Europe des Levriers, the French association with whom I work closely and from whom I have adopted my 3 galgas, plus them helping me get my little Podenca Andaluz Bebe from Seville.

Some of their puppies in one bed died, but there are others – Noche, Jade, Scarlette, Pucca – Cristina, Vice President of EDL, went from Madrid down to Cordoba and brought back some of the dogs, who are now in kennels which need paying for.
