There’s been no let up in the number of galgos abandoned and dumped in the perreras. So many that I simply can’t post them all – 19 in one just one perrera recently, multiply that by the hundreds of perreras in Spain…and that’s just galgos. The figure quoted for dogs killed in perreras in the last year is 180,000! That’s 493 dogs every day, 206 dogs every hour, or 1 dog per minute.
The pressure on the refuges, the volunteers, the fosterers is tremendous – and the national and provincial governments STILL do nothing to implement a mass sterilization programme and educate people not to let their dogs mate.
One example of the pressure on the refuges is an appeal this week from Cristina of Arca de Noe of Albacete.
‘The Refuge has closed doors one week ago, except for except emergency dogs and the injured.
We had last Monday 15/7/2013 328 dogs in the shelter and 58 in foster homes. 150 cats too. More emergencies have arrived and we are overwhelmed. With so many dogs, there are unfortunately some fights. It’s a nightmare. 3 or 4 dogs abandoned every day, another female with puppies, throughout July 11 dogs one day, 14 another day, 9 another day!
So now we have told people we are overfull, they abandon their dogs at petrol stations, in the countryside or on the road 4kms from the refuge!
There is an association in Germany who will take 10 dogs from us but we have to sort the transport which is expensive.
The European Parliament knows that many dogs and galgos are killed every day but they need to know the situation of all the refuges in Spain.’

the number of dogs killed every day round the world must be in the millions then its so sodding heartbreaking i feel so helpless for them all no one in power seems to want to do anything im sure they think they dont have any feelings and dont feel any pain only us people with animals know the the facts of how animals really feel

Okay…I want the world to end! There, I said it! Everyday it’s something. Show me friggin country that is kind to ALL animals. Please…I want to know! S.E. Asian countries with their dog meat festivals. Since July and all the way till end of August, S. Korea is celebrating Bokdays. Approx. 15000 dogs are torched, boiled, skinned, electrocuted, beaten…ALIVE. They hang them and beat them do death. They do all of this in front of their cage mates. Cats aren’t safe either. About 3000 cats are boiled or deep-fried ALIVE. This happens in China, S.Korea (no one knows anything about N. Korea) Taiwan, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia…It sickens me. Then we look to Spain for bullfighting and this recent story ~ then Greece, Ukraine, Romania. Oh…Let not forget Japan for mass genocide of Dolphins and Whales. And of course…drum roll please….The Goddamn Swiss with their dog farms. Sick.
In U.S. hands are dirty too. We’re not saints here. Although we don’t boil brutally murder cats and dogs to eat, we have loser hunters putting traps everywhere to capture wolves and coyotes. They watch the animal suffer; they take trophy photos, then unleash dogs to kill them. It’s heartbreaking to see carcasses of so many majestic wolves and coyotes piled on top of one another ~ and then have these A-holes grin for their photo op. Don’t even get me started with industrial farming.
Humans are predators and some are Godless in killing animals and humans. My hope is for this earth to self-destruct because there’s too many maggot subhumans roaming. When it does, I’ll say, GOOD RIDDANCE; WE DESERVED IT!
Well said Roya, there are thousands of us who would add our voices to yours – every country has murderous human bastards – usually male but many women join in too – who get pleasure out of torturing and killing those not as devious, cunning, sick in the mind -yes, we could use the worst adjectives – every country – but thank goodness for those of us who do care. At least when we do stand up and shout, we might save one animal’s life – and if we didn’t shout, it would progress from bad to worse. We’re all with you, Roya, with the banner waving and protesting. Deborah no one here in Spain lets it happen there are so many people here running shelters working them selfs in the ground to help the galgos and podencos here
The killing stations are full it is nearly the end of July there will be mass killing as they don,t want the work in August
It is not just the fact of seeing a photo posted on facebook and every one jumps up and down SAVE them yes they can be saved if the money is there to save them It cost about 500 euros to save just one galgo form a killing station Blood tests nurtering kenneling transport. fosters are full the shelters are full. All the refuges run on donations only That means fund raising all the time Just to make ends meet. Sad to say so many die every day because there is no where for them to go, unless you live here in Spain no one really understands what it is like. For weeks now every day I go and feed a little dog by the bins He or she si so badly matted I can even see if it,s a boy or girl I can not get near him as he si so terrifed. i went yeaterday some one had chucked the water and food bowl in the bin. This is the attude towards animals here in Spain it is like turning back the tide, We can only do what we can So if you want to help share sponcer a galgo or podenco in a shelter

This story, and so many like it, makes me positively sick! We Americans are brought up to think that the Europeans are so civilized because they’ve been around so long. But the horrors I saw when I was in Greece years ago, and all the reports such as this one, including ones in USA, MAKE ME WANT TO SCREAM AT GOD AND ASK WHY, WHY, WHY???? How can these “civilized” people be so stupid as to not sterilize their animals? How can they leave them to die, bitches to starve while trying to save their pups, etc? Don’t they have a conscience?
And what happens in the Asian countries! Don’t get me started! Another set of civilized people whom we are to respect because they’ve been around so long. Well, I have NO RESPECT for any of these countries who are so despicable. They come to the USA and laugh at us who keep pets, especially inside, and are astounded they can’t find dog or cat on a restaurant menu!!! The Bokdays live beatings, boiling, frying, etc., are so disgusting that I can’t even come up with a word that’s adequate–I know they feel torturing the animal to death is supposed to make it “more tasty, more tender” from the adrenalin. All I can say is that hell is gonna be so full of these perverts there won’t be enough room for them and then what? Oh, I’m so sick of this crap. We’re all supposed to be so “enlightened” in this day and age, yet animal and child torture, murder, perversion, slavery, etc., is on the rise. How do we explain this? How do we change any of it? I spend hours a day signing petitions and writing letters and emails, asking for justice for animals and children, and then hear another story like this. I’ll never stop, but sometimes it seems so futile. :'( :'( :'(
I agree with everything you said, Roya. Humans are depraved and disgusting–no other species on earth does this. Others only kill to survive, and they kill cleanly and quickly. I’m ashamed of my “fellow man” and wish people who did evil things to animals, children, and other adults, would just drop dead on the spot. I’ll bet the horrific behavior would stop real fast, eh?
