  • Galgos dumped everywhere in Murcia! Please help pay vet fees

Angela 190 sweet%20little%20pod Tina 01 2011 Abandoned galgos and podencos everywhere, as well as dumped in killing stations. Can you imagine dumping this little cutie in a killing station?! There is a team trying to catch the podencos in Valencia, (mentioned in a previous post), one of the dogs has disappeared; and there are dozens wandering the streets of Murcia.

Galgos del Sol have been collecting some, and are trying to catch others – too frightened to be caught, so needing to be tempted into a trap. When are the hunters going to realise that the majority of Spaniards despise them for the bad press they give the country around the world. And when are the laws going to be applied.

These dogs all rescued this week need their EU passports preparing

  • Mairena perrera – more cheap accommodation in Spain!

Mairena 8 23 01 2011 210 The Mairena perrera rears its ugly head again. Podencos and galgos amongst the poor souls dumped there to be killed, even a puppy, also a black and white spaniel; living in horrendous conditions. It’s cold, wet, dirty – they are starving – why feed a dog when it’s going to be killed! Cry for these poor souls. If any one can help save them from a miserable death.

  • Publicity for Podencos – help and forever homes wanted

For many years Rick and Lesley Beauchamp in the UK have been helping rehomed podencos rescued by SARA Lanzarote; virtually the only chance of a loving forever home is on mainland Europe. Thanks to Ed of Podencoworld for forwarding this clip of a BBC interview with Lesley. Please contact Ed or SARA Lanzarote if you are interested in helping these fabulous hounds.

  • Spanish hunters abandon podencos too, please help them

Anton 2 Tina 03 01 2011 250 I’m putting out an appeal for podencos, for people to offer them forever homes. There are three at Galgos del Sol (scroll down to Anton and Freya, and Lucky is a new arrival today, 4 pages of them on the Galgos France website, Ibizan Hound Rescue has many deserving podencos, and let’s not forget SARA Lanzarote in the Canary Islands – poor Mozaga has never known life outside of the refuge. Podencos suffer terrible maltreatment on the Spanish Islands, both Canaries and Balearic. Mostly their only hope is to be rehomed on mainland Europe or in the UK. Pepis Refuge is another small British-run shelter with many delightful podencos among their dogs looking for forever homes. And Phoenix Association in Dordogne, France, has Roda and Mindy who arrived in November from SARA Lanzarote and who are looking for forever homes in France.

Please think of the podencos as well as the galgos.

  • Podencos in Ibiza – remember this story?

Podencos 1 250 Do you remember this story from a couple of years ago? Time and again I have tried to contact the Bright Eyes people to find out the result of the court case, with no success atall. Now the story has been found on GN by someone who worked in Ibiza when this was happening. Here’s what she says.

‘I remember this man very well. I was involved with animal rescue in Ibiza from 1997 – 2004. He used to have literally hundreds of podenco ibizencos living, breeding and dying all around his house and the surrounding forest. This man is certainly anything but mentally sick. In fact he offered to sell me two pups who were 4 weeks old at the time, taking them from the mother; disgrace and I told him so.

  • Podencos need help too – can you help?

Blind podenco 200 Jerez perrera Maribel Silvia 12 2010This is another sad casualty of hunting in Spain; this blind podenco was dumped in the Jerez perrera in December. It’s bad enough for all the dogs who can see, imagine not being able to see in that environment too. Luckily Silvia of Galgo Connection Spain in Valencia has taken him to give him a chance of a comfortable future life.

Update 05 01 2011 – Alphonso sadly crossed over the rainbow bridge today. At least in his last few days he knew the sound of kind voices and felt the gentle caress of caring hands.

And there is news in today about an injured podenco which has been taken to the vet by Galgos del Sol.

    Can You Help?

  • Animal Protection Service launched in Alicante, Spain

Just had this news in about an animal protection service launched in the Alicante area. It’s to be hoped they will have some ‘clout’ and be able to prosecute animal maltreatment cases. But it’s the problem of abandoned dogs with their microchips cut out which will be a difficult one to police. Still, it’s a start. Let’s wish them every success.
