  • Mairena Killing Station – Petition to close it down

    Mairena 1 250In previous years I’ve featured galgos and podencos dumped in the Mairena killing station (obviously there are thousands of other types of dogs dumped there too which suffer the same horrendous end to their lives). Because of the bad publicity, volunteers were banned from going in to photo the dogs.

    There is now an on-line petition to close the place down. This is the link. The petition is in Spanish and a translation is below. You have to register with the petition website, here are the instructions by on-line translator:

  • Galga Reka – suffering in Seville

    Reka head 250 11 2011This beautiful galga is Reka. You will see her terrible injuries below. She was found a week ago, the injuries were not fresh, and smelled, it was not known how long she had been suffering like this. She was exhausted, hungry and ready to give up when found.

    Ana from Gran Familia tells the story. ‘She had to be anaesthetised in order to clean up and sew these ugly wounds, the leg muscle has been joined from behind but possibly she will be left with a slight limp. She had some internal bleeding and a torn vulva, which would intimate she was pregnant. It is difficult to imagine how these injuries happened but Reka has had to stay in the vet clinic to have her wounds treated.

  • Esperanza Walks Unaided!

    Remember Esperanza, badly beaten and dumped for dead in a rubbish skip. She is now walking unaided! What a miracle. See the latest videos here and walking down steps, and along the pavement! Everyone involved in saving her life and her recuperation is a miracle worker.

  • The Spanish Galgo in Seville 2011 – translation of TV programme

    This video features galgueros in Seville showing their dogs, heading off for the hunt, hunting itself. It illustrates the type of terrain where the dogs are used, the galgueros themselves, lost galgos, maltreated galgos, El Refugio in Seville where the volunteers pick up the pieces after these men have abandoned and dumped their dogs.

  • Galgo lucky to be alive – between the main road and the train tracks in Seville!

    Galgo train track 2 macu 11 2011 250Trying hard to catch up with all the news, as I had to go to the UK urgently and didn’t have access to Internet. But that didn’t stop the appeals coming into my Inbox, galgos galore being abandoned everywhere, dumped in killing stations by the dozen…it doesn’t get any easier for the volunteers,.

  • The horror of Las Cuadras, Seville – the reality of life for the animals there

    Las Cuadras EDL 250 01 2011L’Europe des Levriers is the French association from whom I adopted my 3 galgos and with whom I have worked on rescues. This is the story of the gypsy camp of Las Cuadras in Seville, as told by their President, Beatrice Monnet, on their website. At the end of this report, you can see a video of the Fundacion Benjamin Menhert on one of their rescues – 600 dogs taken out of the camp in one year!

    ‘Since its inception in 2006, L’Europe des Levriers has repeatedly denounced the terrible camp galgueros Las Cuadras in Seville. Cristina, our Vice President, regularly rescues galgos and podencos from this hell. We go to our kennels in Madrid every 3 or 4 months to bring these rescued dogs to France for adoption.

  • Urgent call – Seville – galgo puppy abandoned, anyone room for it?

    Galgo puppy Seville 250 10 2011Hunting in Spain has only just begun and already the slow and sick galgos are being dumped and abandoned. Here’s an urgent appeal for help for a 2-month old galgo puppy in Seville, abandoned tied by a rope to a fence.

    Sara found it, she has already two galgos at home, abandoned in the streets, and her partner won’t have another one. Please can any associations help? Thank you.

  • Seville, galgo pup rescued from rubbish bin!

    Bebe 250 08 2011 This little galgo pup was rescued from a rubbish bin in Seville. She is about 2 months old, has been named Bebe and is now in a special shelter for puppies, costing 4 euros/day.     Good afternoon, We need help to catch a galga in Umbrete, Seville. The galga was abandoned about two months ago, but in recent weeks someone has been beaten or has run over and God knows. The fact is that the galga is now injured, has a leg hanging and getting worse by the minute. We need help to capture the galga…
