Vanessa Luque has sent this appeal for homes for mother and daughter galgas which are currently in a refuge in Madrid, are becoming very introverted and withdrawn. Here’s what she says.
‘I usually publicise our dogs through my website and my Facebook profile … but there are now so many dogs in the kennels and it is causing problems. So I am appealing for these two galgas, an urgent rehoming case.
Every day I receive emails from Spain, galgos and podencos dumped, abandoned, injured, or hunters taking them to the perreras to be killed or to the shelters and threatening to kill the dogs if the volunteers don’t take them. Day in and day out, the pressure is never ending. I have lost count of how many dogs I have been told about in Jerez, Gesser, Mairena, Cordoba, Seville, Malaga perreras. Last weekend I drove down to the Spanish border and, along with a couple of other cars, brought back 20 galgos and a couple of podencos…many of them are now in foster and awaiting forever homes.

Among the galgos rescued in Murcia at the end of the winter 2010 hunting season was a brindle bitch, living rough in a series of pipes. Tina Solera set out to catch her, but that was easier said than done. Over two weeks went by, the galga evading capture until one day she was spotted sharing a pizza with a little girl. Tina gave a collar and leash to the girl, who got the collar over the galga’s head, and at last she could be taken to the refuge.
Here are some more podencos, abandoned, injured – one hung by a steel strap, another found with a metal collar, starving, needing help. Even two podenco puppies in a perrera in Seville!
