  • 2 galgos down a 30ft well – Galgos del Sol to the rescue

Well_Galgos_GdS_250 1_2013We all know that most galgueros, especially in rural areas, will stop at nothing to dispose of their dogs, especially at the end of hunting. Galgos del Sol and Tina Solera have just taken in two young galgas, Tina tells the story.

‘We help alot of galgueros in this area…… I am so bloody disapointed with this, I can’t tell you. We have spoken with some galgueros and they believe for sure these two young galgas were stolen and the thieves did not want them to get back home. That is why galgueros build BUNKERS to prevent theft. Pistolero was stolen from a galguero here in our village two years ago… he was also found over 4 hrs away down in a deep well. These two young galgas were thrown in a well 30 meters deep and pulled out approx a couple of days ago by firemen.

  • Murcia – illegally ‘training’ galgos – the police turn a blind eye!

Training galgos Murcia 250 22 10 2012Running galgos alongside a motorised vehicle – motorbike, car, van, quad bike, is illegal in Spain – except that Andalucia Junta have just passed a law to rescind this – and make it legal again. I have participated in a rescue from Spain which included a galga which had been very badly injured in this way – she went down and was dragged….photos of her are in my book. Paco luckily had great medical, physical and mental care – swimming physio, massage etc. and is now happily in a forever home in France.

This photo was taken in Murcia last week – October 2012. The man is breaking the law. The person who took the photo is a neighbour and frightened of making a denuncia because she and her family would suffer repurcussions from the hunting fraternity. Seprona won’t do anything – they are hunters too.

Here are some of the comments from the Galgos del Sol Facebook page.

  • Starving, underweight, sick, just rescued in Murcia – can you help?

Marie 1 Tina 29 03 2011 250 Latest guest of Galgos del Sol. Tina says ‘Marie was caught on the streets of Torre Pacheco. This is a town full of abandoned galgos where I am trying to catch Lorenzo. When I got the call i thought it might have been him they caught! It was Antonio who called me to see if we could take her so I said yes. She is injured, extremely underweight which you can’t appreciate in the photos and frightened. She will go to the vets at 5.30pm. We already know NO microchip. (UPDATE 30/03/2011 – she has not been vaccinated as she is too thin, blood test done and sent for analysis)

  • Galga Gaby finds her forever home

LALI Tina Solera 250 Among the galgos rescued in Murcia at the end of the winter 2010 hunting season was a brindle bitch, living rough in a series of pipes. Tina Solera set out to catch her, but that was easier said than done. Over two weeks went by, the galga evading capture until one day she was spotted sharing a pizza with a little girl. Tina gave a collar and leash to the girl, who got the collar over the galga’s head, and at last she could be taken to the refuge.

  • Galgos del Sol – Sponsor a Kennel and donate to rescued galgos

Tina & Ulises 2010 200 Galgos del Sol is a new association in Murcia, founded by Tina Solera and her friend Gaynor. 5 Kennels are currently nearly completed – free labour, donated materials. These kennels will house the galgos which Tina is rescuing – everywhere she drives, there seems to be an abandoned galgo! Funds are desperately needed to pay for microchipping, vaccinating, castrating and feeding these galgos – donations to buy food especially needed at the moment.

Sponsor a Kennel is a scheme set up by Tina to help with running costs. From just 3 euros a month – more if you can afford it – you will get an update on the galgos in your particular kennel, their progress and efforts to rehome. We’re all feeling the pinch in the recession, rescued animals most of all. If you can help, please email Tina direct for information on how to Sponsor a Kennel.

  • Galgo Guapo runs the Canicross in Murcia – please sponsor him!

Tina & Guapo training Canicross 11 2010 300 Plea for sponsorship. Regular readers will know Tina Solera is another amazing volunteer working in Murcia to save abandoned and injured galgos, as well as helping at Los Infiernos refuge. Tina and her galgo Guapo are in training for the Canicross. Here’s what Tina says about it.

‘Its a 5km sprint on the 21 Nov and Guapo is the first ever galgo to run in this canicross race in this area, possibly all over Spain, although the secretary was not 100% sure about other parts of Spain. For Guapo and me, it is more about publicity for galgos than anything else but if we can kick some dalmation and huskie arses along the way, that will be great. Just hoping the ankle will hold up after twisting it the other day but so far so good. I am so excited…. Guapo, the first galgo to run it, let’s hope we can raise some eyebrows and change a few peoples’opinions about galgos, as well as raising money to pay for microchipping, vaccinating and sterilizing the galgos I rescue.’
