  • Galgos del Sol – catching the abandoned galgos in Murcia

Galgos del Sol is a small association formed in October 2010 by Tina Solera, who had spent the previous few years saving galgos and podencos which ended up in Los Infiernos dog shelter. In the past 7 months GdS have rescued and rehomed 53 galgos and podencos. But as with all associations, they exist on donations and fundraising. Here are four of the latest galgos to be rescued – from the side of a motorway, in the middle of a lorry transport area, terrified loose on the campo. Vet fees are mounting, please donate if you can help them.

  • GalgoConnectionSpain – help save Draco, a Jerez killing station survivor

Draco 2 Silvia 02 2011 250 Jerez has two perreras, one municipal and one privately owned. This winter it has been difficult to keep up with the numbers of dogs in these places, especially galgos and some podencos. I haven’t been able to post them all on GN, but suffice to say that a few dozen have been taken out by rescue associations, before being killed. They range in age from a 5 month old podenca (Angela) to 1 and 2 year olds up to the mama breeding machines, 7 years upwards. Some of them are negative to diseases, others develope them after rescue and some are at the stage of simply wanting to give up on life.

Draco is one poor boy, thin, sick and with a body covered in scars.

  • Galgo Ken, surviving and fighting his way back to health – thanks Galgos del Sol

Ken_rehab_3 18 02 2011 250 Yesterday I linked to an update on Nicholas, a great galgo survivor. Today I give you an update on Ken, another brave soul fighting to regain his health after being hit from behind by a vehicle. He has now been operated on and the vet is happy that there is now feeling in Ken’s back legs, and he is not in pain. Galgos del Sol continue to work closely with the vet and Ken – but it’s costly both in time, emotion and vet fees. If you can help with vet fees, donate by credit card to UK bank or Paypal to tinasolera@hotmail.co.uk.

Galgo rotten bottom 1 11 02 2011 250 We’ve already had puppy Marisol, rescued and nursed back to health by Baas Galgo, now we have this poor little puppy, starving, wounds to his eyes, and gangrene in his rear end! Here’s his story.

‘TIGRE, 5 month old galgo, suffering wounds and gangrene to his rear end and tail. Another story from Seville! Some boys in my village told me about him, very ill, and I could not believe his rear end. The tail ws completely rotten and infection had already reache the top of the tail to his spine, his anus and anal passage was inflamed and infected, wounds all over his body.

  • Galgos dumped everywhere in Murcia! Please help pay vet fees

Angela 190 sweet%20little%20pod Tina 01 2011 Abandoned galgos and podencos everywhere, as well as dumped in killing stations. Can you imagine dumping this little cutie in a killing station?! There is a team trying to catch the podencos in Valencia, (mentioned in a previous post), one of the dogs has disappeared; and there are dozens wandering the streets of Murcia.

Galgos del Sol have been collecting some, and are trying to catch others – too frightened to be caught, so needing to be tempted into a trap. When are the hunters going to realise that the majority of Spaniards despise them for the bad press they give the country around the world. And when are the laws going to be applied.

These dogs all rescued this week need their EU passports preparing

  • Mairena perrera – more cheap accommodation in Spain!

Mairena 8 23 01 2011 210 The Mairena perrera rears its ugly head again. Podencos and galgos amongst the poor souls dumped there to be killed, even a puppy, also a black and white spaniel; living in horrendous conditions. It’s cold, wet, dirty – they are starving – why feed a dog when it’s going to be killed! Cry for these poor souls. If any one can help save them from a miserable death.

  • Publicity for Podencos – help and forever homes wanted

For many years Rick and Lesley Beauchamp in the UK have been helping rehomed podencos rescued by SARA Lanzarote; virtually the only chance of a loving forever home is on mainland Europe. Thanks to Ed of Podencoworld for forwarding this clip of a BBC interview with Lesley. Please contact Ed or SARA Lanzarote if you are interested in helping these fabulous hounds.

  • Galgos saved from death – please donate to vet fees

Bombero and Cremo 1 17 01 2011 250 The perreras in Spain are full to bursting with abandoned dogs, especially galgos now that the hunting season is drawing to a close. Despite all the ones rescued from Jerez perrera, Cadiz, there are still more than a couple of dozen there, awaiting a painful death. At El Paraiso perrera, they are feeding the galgos, hoping someone will rescue them. Several have been taken to foster homes already, and two more were taken out last weekend. White ones, which were once regarded as THE most important galgo to the Spanish aristocracy.
