  • Las Palma, Canary Islands – man shoots dog dead with homemade weapon

FECAPAP (Canaria Federation of associations protective of animals and plants), in the Canary Islands, recently condemned the killing of a dog by a home made weapon. Earlier this week, a resident of Mazo, La Palma, killed his dog by shooting it with an illegally owned homemade firearm made of two cylindrical tubes, using 16 cartridges! The man was arrested by the Guardia Civile and will be prosecuted for possession of an illegal firearm.

FECAPAP (together with PACMA) have denounced the killing, in that the dog’s owner didn’t give it a chance of being rehomed by handing it in to a local shelter.

  • SOS Animals, Fuengirola – shelter in crisis!

SOS Animals logo 200SOS Animals is being evicted – they have until Friday to find somewhere else for all their rescued dogs. This is one of the pieces of news which always enrages me…the authorities are supposed to be responsible for all abandoned animals – we all know they turn a blind eye much of the time. And they penalise and make life difficult for the wonderful people who run refuges, fundraise, volunteers. Ohhhh, it makes me sooooo angry! Please put your hands together to pray that all these dogs and cats find room somewhere. SOS Animals, near Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol. Donate here to their relocation fund.

  • Liberty – 2 broken back legs, can you offer a foster home urgently?

Liberty 4 16 01 2011 155 Sometimes the sheer stupidity of some people is unbelievable. You don’t have to be a hunter to be cruel, as this story shows. This galgo was rescued over Xmas by a woman who lives in a 3rd floor apartment in Benalmadena. Last week she went out and left a window ajar. The galgo pushed open the window, got onto the balcony and jumped!

The galgo has been operated on by a hospital in Benalmadena, he has staples inside the leg and stitches outside. He has a hole left for drainage of liquid. He fell to the ground. The neighbour saw the dog, called the girl and he was eventually taken to the vet. The diagnosis is

  • Galgos saved from death – please donate to vet fees

Bombero and Cremo 1 17 01 2011 250 The perreras in Spain are full to bursting with abandoned dogs, especially galgos now that the hunting season is drawing to a close. Despite all the ones rescued from Jerez perrera, Cadiz, there are still more than a couple of dozen there, awaiting a painful death. At El Paraiso perrera, they are feeding the galgos, hoping someone will rescue them. Several have been taken to foster homes already, and two more were taken out last weekend. White ones, which were once regarded as THE most important galgo to the Spanish aristocracy.

  • Baas Galgo and Ginn art auction – raising funds for Villa del Rio Shelter, Cordoba

The Villa del Rio shelter in Cordoba is again suffering floods after the river burst its banks. To raise funds for the shelter, Baas Galgo in association with Ginn are organising an auction of artwork by Pam Emmerick. Click here to see the artwork and bid

Sandra and Leticia do marvellous work at this shelter, I can’t praise them enough for what they do. But the thing I can’t get my head round is that it is owned by a hunter who also breeds galgos and sells them to the galgueros; a rich man! I visited it in June 2009.

  • Spanish Galgo hanged in Badajoz – the hell of Spain

Hanged galgo 250 Extremadura 16 01 2011 Terrible news coming in all this weekend……and this is the worst. A galgo found hanged near Badajoz, which we know is a hellhole for all dogs. Here’s the link to the story. This is a Google translation.

Extremadura environmentalists complained to the Office of Environment of Badajoz on the 14th of January after the discovery of a greyhound hanged in the town of Don Benito.

The animal had been cruelly tortured with multiple blows all over his body and burns on the outside of the ears. He was hanged under the Secondary Canal aqueduct located in the area known as sows, of that municipality of Don Benito.
