  • Not Spain – Leeds, Yorkshire, England!

    Leeds Greyhound and Lurcher Rescue 400 11 2 2018
This poor soul was found in a Leeds park in the cold and wet, tied to a tree. She is now safe with Tia Greyhound & Lurcher Rescue in Yorkshire. Here’s her story.

‘This petrified mess isn’t in any notorious offshore hellhole. She is in Yorkshire.

NK PAJ is tattooed, micro-chipped and was found tied to a tree in Middleton Woods in this weather. Her brother and sister are still running at Sheffield and Monmore but this little scrap wasn’t fast enough to merit the cost of running on the main circuit under GBGB rules. Had she done so Gemma would have qualified for a place in an official re-homing scheme? Consequently, she doesn’t exist within the racing world and the independent rescues have to break her and her kind’s fall on its behalf.

In some ways, she is a typical example of the dogs who fall into this forgotten category. Untraceable as far as the UK goes, we know she ran at Derry and spent some time coursing in Ireland. We can only speculate how she ended up in this condition in a Leeds park. Every rescue has a few of these dogs, they have no protection from the industry they were bred for (such as it is) and therefore are the most likely to fall among thieves. Tia alone has about fifteen in the kennel block right now, though thankfully not in this condition.

  • The tragedy of the Spanish galgo and podenco

I’ve copied this from a post on my Save the Galgo facebook page. It is written by a member of Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert. You can read my comment about it at the end.

The silent tragedy of the Spanish galgos – the current situation
Written by Gisela Mehnert, Fundación Benjamin Mehnert (FBM)

The fate of the Spanish galgos and also podencos seems to be of no interest to anyone, at least on the Only in this way can it be explained that in recent years, in which the fate of these two races receives more attention than ever before, there is no improvement in the situation This means that during the hunting season (October to the end of January in Andalusia) an unchanged high number of dogs is found in poor condition and Spain is the only eu country where hunting with galgos and podencos is still permitted.

  • Marching in Malaga for Day of the Galgo & Podenco

    Malaga March 5 400
Ann Marie Payne of SOS Animals, Malaga, took part in the Day of the Galgo March there on Sunday 4th February. Here is her report.

‘Well we finally got to the march In Malaga, but not without incident I might add. First of all I was late (as usual) picking JacquiRoss up, but we arrived safely in the centre of Malaga. Neither of us knew where we were going, so it was like the blind leading the blind. Roadworks everywhere and diversions. We wanted to go right and the signs said go left Grrrr.

Eventually we stopped at some traffic lights, and there to our left was the march, but we couldn’t see anywhere to park. So we had to head straight on. We were nearly back on the motorway before we could turn round again, miles out of our way. I think we passed the North Pole. Heading back I said to Jacqui, I know a great place to park, which I found, took me ages to get in it, and then she said ” I think we’re miles away” (God help me). So I did what you shouldn’t do in the centre of Malaga, a U turn. Back on the main road towards the marina we saw a parking sign. Any port in a storm will do, but we wanted to be at the port!!! So we parked up and started walking.

  • BRAVE GALGUEROS! THIS IS WHAT THEY DO TO THEIR DOGS!

    Scooby pregnant galga warning 400
This story is beyond belief…what scumbag sub-human could hang a pregnant galga? Somehow she got loose…here’s her story. Scooby to the rescue, please help.

    ‘Protectora y Santuario Scooby – 2nd February 2018

Pregnant, with a deep wound in her neck and lying on the road, asking for help… That’s how this galga has been found in Valladolid, in a place where it’s usual to see abandoned galgos hit by cars day after day… We think they tried to hang her; we don’t want to imagine all her suffering until she was rescued.

She is now in a clinic. Apart from the big wound, her trachea was perforated and she has needed a surgery to remove her puppies. We hope she recovers completely and finds the decent and happy life she, and all galgos, deserve.

We have to finish with this brutality. And we need the citizens help; it’s impossible that nobody sees anything. We don’t have to be afraid, we must denounce the abusers. #StopGalgueros

  • Figures for Galgos and Podencos – it will frighten you!

This is the text of a presentation I made at the PAES International Conference on Animal Welfare in October 2016.

Let’s look at estimated ANNUAL figures for uncontrolled breeding of galgos and podencos.

    GALGOS

Back in the early 1990’s, a friend of mine who was a Daily Mail staff photographer, was visiting the Castile-la Mancha province. His guide walked him into an olive grove where Jim photographed the olive trees, most of which had a dead galgo hanging from them, which made headlines in the paper.

In 2009 SOS Galgos (Barcelona) claimed on their website that 160 galgos were abandoned every day.
